Our textile design student Matthew Riddle ('25) studied in Florence, Italy, at Lorenzo de’ Medici this past spring semester. In addition to taking textile-based classes such as Basic Printmaking, he further immersed himself in Italian culture by visiting museums for inspiration! At Wilson we encourage our students to study abroad to build global knowledge and learn about other cultures. We asked Matthew what his favorite part of the experience was and he said: “Probably etching in my printmaking class. It’s a really old technique and less common nowadays and some of the best ones came from Italy. So it's been really cool learning it here and being able to see the old ones in museums and galleries.”

My colleague sold a $30,000 piece of art in 10 minutes. It was during my my fifth international art fair business trip as global affairs head for ATELIER AKI, this time to Shanghai. While I was captivated by the art and culture of West Bund Art & Design, my greatest lessons came from observing our partner in China. With remarkable poise, she sold multiple works priced between $20,000 and $40,000—within minutes. Here are some of her small actions that ultimately made all the difference in closing these sales. 1. Speak slowly; nothing undermines composure like speaking too quickly. 2. Use a calm, gentle tone and a low voice to create a sense of calm amidst the busy fair. 3. Stay fully present and respectful with the person you’re engaging, despite the pull of other inquiries. 4. Offer a genuine smile when discussing the artwork, sharing warmth and enthusiasm. Ultimately, the most essential aspect of sales and business isn’t anything technical; it’s simply the mastery of building genuine relationships. What truly influences a buyer’s decision is not only the artwork itself but the meaningful experience they share with the person presenting it.

Two-time 🏆️🏆️ Oscar-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter describes the role that Marvelous Designer played in her costume design process for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever: “When I immerse myself into the script, my mind generates ideas for a period or an Afro-Future wardrobe that evokes emotion and tells a story about a character. That's when Marvelous Designer comes in: a tool to pre-visualize costuming ideas makes the art of costume design multi-dimensional. I can rapidly prototype an idea, the software can mimic fabric texture, how a garment would fit form, or drape on an actor, and even how the costume would behave in motion. It's concept art that moves. I can put what's in my head on the computer screen and fully realize the idea before we go to print a pattern or cut the fabric and turn it into reality.” Check out the introduction to Marvelous Designer from this year’s Scientific and Technical Awards Presentation from the U.S. Academy of Motion Pictures here:

KENNY UNCUT # 2 🎬 Art Fairs Fair or not they're here to stay. #ArtCologne, established in 1967 as the “Cologne Artmarket” by #RudolphZwirner (father of a certain art dealer) and #HeinStünke, was the very first fair organized by commercial galleries for modern and contemporary art, with the remit to inject vigor into the (then) sleepy, nascent market for post war art—replete with prices affixed directly to the wall. The fair was soon eclipsed in popularity by Art Basel, launched in 1970 by #TrudlBruckner, #BalzHilt and #ErnstBeyeler, the premier such event to date. Though Beyeler gets all the plaudits, it was a woman, Bruckner, who gets short shrift as the force behind the impetus for the initiative. Though many are wont to criticize art fairs, and have done so since their inception, they fulfill an integral role in the ecosystem of the art world providing ease of access (and practicality) to see a multitude of international galleries under one roof; or rather, as is often the case, a tent. And a boon for the financial wellbeing of some galleries and artists. Obviously, participation is expensive, burdensome on family life and highly selective in who profits, not to mention the environmental toll. Whether you view these art market staples as economic essentials, necessary evils or funfairs, it’s usually those that benefit the least from the carny atmosphere that moan the most.
