This is one type of equity work I would love to see more of! Race-Based Clinical Algorithms can be quite harmful for many reasons (here are just a few): 1️⃣ The reinforcement of biological determinism which perpetuate health disparities by overlooking context and social determinants of health. 2️⃣ Inaccurate assessments by misclassifying risks and severity based on a person's race, leading to delayed treatment and care for many patients of color. 3️⃣ Relying on race-based adjustments in algorithms reduces the emphasis on individual patient characteristics and intersectionalities. 🔆 Key Consideration: Also important to consider are the social processes (white supremacy, assimilation) and power relations (racism) that have left thousands of people with an inaccurate view of their own race! Especially with the emergence of DNA testing, we see that ancestry as it has been passed down orally is not always accurate to the global regions our ancestors originated from.
The NYC public health department is breaking new ground in the promotion of equity. It is convening clinical groups and organizations to examine where health care algorithms that govern how care is delivered have within them certain incorrect assumptions that result in poorer care for people of color. The agency is taking a science-based approach and going at this by examining one clinical treatment area at a time - starting with pulmonary function testing, with vaginal birth after caesarian and soon moving to hypertension care. This kind of work highlights a new and valuable role for a public health department - using its convening skills, its partnerships with clinical care facilities and its commitment to scientific rigor to root out inequities in care. Soon-to-be acting NYC health commissioner Michelle Morse is providing valuable leadership. Michelle Morse Lisa Landau Dave A. Chokshi, MD Robert Goldstein Leandris Liburd Georges Benjamin J. We’d need to shift beyond purely academic discussions and focus more on real-world health system operations. The new npj Health Systems journal provides an excellent platform for these translational work.
Health systems science uses systems thinking as part of a transdisciplinary approach that transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries. It integrates and synthesizes knowledge from multiple disciplines to address real-world problems in healthcare with pragmatic solutions. I am super excited to share the inaugural editorial by our inaugural editorial board members, defining health systems from the perspectives of systems thinking, science, and engineering, and discussing their current challenges and opportunities. We envision how health systems science as a field can advance the continuous learning and improvement of health systems, and hope to attract more research to #npjhealthsystems at Springer Nature. Exciting Update! Our team is thrilled to be with Julius Wilder, MD, PhD, from Duke University's Department of Medicine. Dr. Wilder is leading a first-of-its-kind Health Equity Patient Education Study funded by Health Monitor. This three-year longitudinal study aims to address health disparities by exploring how diverse populations respond to patient education through various channels like digital, social, print and audio with the goal of identifying the most effective methods and communication infrastructures for reaching underserved communities with vital health information. With more and more patients relying on social media as a primary source of health information, we learn that social media and health equity are inextricably linked and will continue to disrupt healthcare. "We've built a strong community of passionate individuals and groups who are committed to transforming healthcare and tackling health inequalities.” - Tim Chico, Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine Just over twelve months in, the South Yorkshire Digital Health Hub is making strides along the road to addressing the stark health inequalities that exist across the region. Led by the University of Sheffield in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University, the £4 million Hub has: - Empowered the public by engaging with local people to help make sure new technology works for everyone, particularly marginalised groups. - Built a growing community and forged partnerships with academia, industry and the NHS. - Invested in the future through the funding of innovative projects aiming to improve people’s health and quality of life - Invested in the region through a series of Google-funded research and training opportunities to help tackle inequalities, upskill the region and drive economic growth. This is exactly what we need to help materialize the #value of the #patientperspective, types of knowledge (or #patientexperience) but also types of #patientexpertise and how we build a good representation of both. Thx for sharing Amanda Bok & Vincent Dumez!

Finally, here is our article which proposes a classification of #patientknowledge just published in Social Theory and Health, what we commonly called since we presented it at a conference: “the head of knowledge”. It is a proposal to go beyond what we describe ad nauseam as “#experientialknowledge”. Just to say : yes agreed “experiential” but not only that, much more in fact… Are you the right person for our exciting health research project? Work has begun to appoint the first roles to an exciting £4.8m scheme that will create a centre of excellence in research into local health-related issues affecting people in north and west Cumbria. The closing date for applications to these first three leading roles is 26 March 2024. More information can be found on the council's website: https://lnkd.in/eZ35xYmd More details on the University of Cumbria’s Institute of Health is on their website: https://lnkd.in/dSSwY_s Cumberland Council is receiving the funding invested by National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) to set up its new NIHR Health Determinants Research Collaboration (HDRC). There is a network of NIHR HDRCs across the nation. They enable local authorities to become more research-active, embedding a culture of evidence-based decision making in their activities. The NIHR Cumberland HDRC went live on 1 January 2024 with University of Cumbria as Cumberland Council’s primary academic partner. The money will go towards the creation of a new research team which will work with partners in the voluntary sector. Its work will largely focus on some of the more deprived local communities across the new local authority area. The first roles are a Research and Innovation Manager who will lead the scheme, supported by two research officers. Embedded in the council, the team will be closely associated with University of Cumbria’s Institute of Health, which has a long-standing reputation for the education of allied health professionals and research including tackling health inequalities. By boosting research, NIHR HDRC partners will gain a better understanding of the health issues and inequalities in the area so that the council and decision-makers can develop strategies on how best to tackle them to improve the health and wellbeing of its residents. Boosting research capacity in coastal and rural communities is a key part of NIHR’s work with under-served communities and was highlighted in a recent Chief Medical Officer’s report.
