It's all about keeping super-detailed records of what you buy and sell, so you always know what's in stock and what's flying off the shelves. Think barcodes, scanners, and those nifty POS systems you see at the checkout. With perpetual inventory, you're never left guessing about how many items you've got to sell or what they're worth. When you bring in new stuff, you log it right away to boost your inventory count. And when you make a sale, the value gets smoothly shifted from your inventory stash to the Cost of Goods Sold, giving you a clear picture of your profits. Perpetual inventory overview: - Keep detailed records of each inventory purchases and sale - Continuously(perpetual) shows the quantity and cost of the inventory - Often use bar codes, scanners and POS Systems - Always know exactly what quantities they have available to sell - Always know exactly what the inventory asset and COGS values are - When inventory is purchased, each items is entered to increase inventory - When items are sold, the value is transferred from inventory asset to cost of goods sold. With periodic inventory, you're not meticulously logging every purchase and sale like with perpetual inventory. Instead, you're conducting a comprehensive inventory assessment at specific intervals, such as monthly or quarterly. Here's the process: Firstly, you conduct a physical count of all remaining inventory at the end of the period. Then, you determine the beginning inventory, which is the closing balance from the previous period. Next, you calculate the total cost of goods purchased during the period. Finally, you subtract the ending inventory value from the sum of the beginning inventory and purchases to derive the Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) for the period. This method provides a snapshot of the goods sold and their associated costs over the designated timeframe, facilitating financial analysis and decision-making. Periodic Inventory overview: - Do not keep detailed records of each inventory purchases and sale - Cost of goods sold is determined only at the end of the period by doing the following: 1. Do a physical count of all inventory on hand at the end of the period 2. Determine the beginning inventory (ending value from previous period) 3. Add the cost of goods purchased over the period 4.
