"Power and inclusion in Cross-Sector Social Interaction" was the title of the Strategic Partnerships Conference (CSSI 2024) that took place in Cape Town last week. I had the pleasure of attending it virtually and presenting my paper on how to develop a common understanding of problems and solutions in circular innovation. The key take-aways from this conference were: 1. The power of interaction between practitioners and researchers: this is one of the few conferences that includes both groups. The connection between practical examples and theoretical abstraction made it very insightful. 2. The power of facilitation: The track sessions differed a lot depending on who led the sessions. Personally, I liked the sessions that enabled a comprehensive, reflective discussion at the end. 3. The power of giving: It was my second time participating in the doctoral consortium at CSSI. As the last time, I'm enchanted and impressed by the level of support, deep reflection, and developmental opportunities this community offers. A big, big thank you Oana Branzei for organising and facilitating this. And the most practical one: If you want to mobilise rural entrepreneurial activity you simply ask: "Do you want to make money?" :) - This was an insight from research by Haiying Lin. Critical reflections: The tension between the desire for practical, systemic impact and academic rigour is very tangible within this community. Personally, it is the more valuable to interact with other scholars to learn how others resolve this tension at different stages of their careers. Systemically, I wonder how we can juxtapose the two goals better as a community of practice (and research). Also, I would like to challenge the conference theme: While social interaction is undoubtedly critical to exercise agency, where are the socio-material, socio-technological, and last but not least, socio-ecological interactions in this equation? Cross-sector partnerships cover all these interactions - as researchers, we should make sure that our research also takes all aspects into account. A big thank you to Ralph Hamann and Sarita Sehgal, for their huge organising effort. And thank you to former and new connections for making this conference such an insightful experience: Karin Bäckstrand, Rob van Tulder, M. Hassan Awad, Ana Cristina Dahik Loor, Iteke van Hille, Corbin Raymond, Domenico Dentoni, Natalie Slawinski, Helen Haugh, Lea Stadtler, Amelia Clarke, Sergio Lazzarini, Joanna Stanberry, Jonathan Doh, Alberto Bertello, Luke Fiske, Supriya Singh, Tulin Dzhengiz, Chau Bui, Anne Norheim-Hansen, Nantenaina Tahiry Andriamalala #CSP #collaboration #CSSI #partnering #SDGs

That's why Katapult Future Fest (KFF24) is introducing a new way of convening a conference that inspires and gathers input to design new conference formats and community and platform-building initiatives and ignite social movements that catalyze systemic change and build trust. Conferences and gatherings can significantly impact driving social, cultural, and systemic change. However, traditional conference structures must be reimagined to encourage collaboration, innovation, and action. This is where the Boutique Conference for Change comes in. We are testing, prototyping, and taking a leap of faith, and we would love to hear your thoughts and feedback.

Trade shows are the ideal setting for discussing important topics for business and society. Including the topic of inclusion, which our President & CEO Wolfram Diener addresses in the first episode of our new video series "Facing Tomorrow" entitled "Inclusive Innovations". Companies are becoming increasingly aware of their social responsibility and are offering ways to participate through their products and services. Progress in this area can also be seen at our trade fairs such as REHACARE – International Trade Fair for Rehabilitation and Care and boot Düsseldorf. Here you can see first-hand how new technologies and services can make people's everyday lives easier and more inclusive. Kieler Woche will be just as inclusive in the coming days. For example, there will be escorts for wheelchair users and the visually impaired. All this shows: The topic of inclusion is more relevant than ever. What happens if the Fab (La Fabrique de la paix) connects with the Geneva Macro Labs community? That's what we are best at: creating synergies to shape the #sustainable future we imagine. Thanks to our speakers Tamara Pironnet Clarhed and Jonathan Thrall from the Geneva Graduate Institute and all participants for another inspiring afterwork event. Here are some takeaways: 👉 Spaces can have a great influence on how people interact and collaborate 👉 #Innovation starts with being open and curious and to listen to what others have to say (independent of age or expertise) 👉 Breaking silos and connecting people needs to build on a common understanding: People come at a problem from different angles but have a shared vision of making it work 👉 Meaningful engagements and connections are best made in informal settings

How can you turn the #challenge of moving to a new city into an #opportunity? ☕️ Last week, I enjoyed attending the Women@START brunch organized by Annika Schienbein and Melanie Pospisil. It wasn’t just about a delicious Sunday meal, but about connecting, discussing female empowerment and beyond. 📦 Recently moving to Munich for my studies has been both exciting and overwhelming. With all its unfamiliarity, adjusting to a new environment made stepping out of my comfort zone to network outside of university life feel less urgent, if not a bit daunting. 💙 Yet, finding a like-minded community like START Munich turned out to be the best decision for me to transform uncertainty into growth and a new city into a place I can already call home. 🤝 Networking isn’t just about professional growth — it’s about building relationships that help you thrive in unfamiliar environments. By attending events related to your passions or joining local communities with shared interests, you can open doors to new opportunities, feel understood and supported, and get a sense of belonging. This has been a valuable learning for me as the year wraps up, and I encourage anyone facing similar changes to take this step — it’s worth it! ✨I’m thankful to have experienced this once again, connecting with inspiring, open-minded women and having engaging conversations, despite our different backgrounds. 🚀 Looking forward to more meaningful exchanges and connections ahead! Have you ever had a similar experience? What helps you create a feeling of home in a new place?

How do business events create value for your work as a young professional? If you have been following me on LinkedIn, you will have noticed that I attend business events frequently. Many fellow #youngprofessionals ask me how I choose which events to attend, what I hope to achieve, and how I balance them with my other work commitments. Initially, in my career, I found business events somewhat challenging. Now, I navigate them with ease, thanks to the advice of colleagues, my own experiences, and the time I invest in preparing for these events. Here are some examples and practical steps on how I prepare: - First, along with the team at INSPIR8ION, I have defined my professional identity —meaning the topics I wish to pursue, and what I want to be known for. For me, these topics are #technology, or as we call them, emerging technologies (like autonomous & uncrewed intelligents systems), and #femaleleadership. These choices serve as a compass, guiding me through events related to these areas. - Secondly, I consider who I want to collaborate with in my roles at Realisatie IBDS, DronePort Rotterdam, and INSPIR8ION. #Stakeholdermanagement is crucial for all projects. By understanding which partners are relevant, I know where they will be, allowing me to approach them with any questions or opportunities I have. - It is also important to think about how you want to position yourself within a network. Decide who you want to speak to and what the desired outcomes should be. This strategic planning can help the effectiveness of your networking. - I determine the goals of each event beforehand, which can range from collaboration to networking and visibility, or gaining new knowledge. If an event offers the latest insights or lessons learned in your field or sector, that's a compelling reason to attend. Below are some events I attended last month: 1. I joined the breakfast meetup during the Upstream Festival for #womenintech. This was the kickoff for the new network Rotterdam Women in Tech thanks to Caroline Williams. 2. Alongside the team from DronePort Rotterdam, I attended the iTanks Festival. This event was an opportunity to network, exchange ideas, and present our vision for the future of drone technology. 3. Krystle Koers✨ organised GovTech Day, which was filled with workshops about the use of technology within governments. I participated in workshops ranging from using Open Source software within government (thanks Boris 🧑🚀 van Hoytema!) to the latest developments in immersive tech at Provincie Zuid-Holland, thanks to Veronique Klaassen. 4. I had the opportunity to pitch DronePort Rotterdam at Robodam during the Upstream Festival, thanks to Maaike van Zuilen and Christine Fraser. The goal of this event was to bridge the gap between the #dronesector and the #roboticssector and to promote this integration. Seize every event as an opportunity to fuel your growth and expand your horizon—make your mark, one event at a time!
