Only 14 countries have explicit renewable capacity targets in their current commitments under the Paris Agreement. It's promising to see the global commitment to triple renewable capacity by 2030 from COP28. The current NDCs show we're far from reaching that goal. It's crucial for countries to align their national plans with this ambitious target and invest more in clean energy, especially in emerging economies. The upcoming NDC updates present a vital opportunity to close the gap and achieve our climate goals.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) 2024 report is out, and there is good news and not so good news!? The good news? Renewable energy is on track to meet almost half of the world’s electricity demand by 2030. Solar and wind are growing fast, and many countries are hitting their renewable targets. But here’s the not so good part: ====================== We are still not on track to triple capacity by 2030 which is critical if we really want to tackle climate change. The report suggests that governments need to focus on grid upgrades and storage along other recommendations. And while this is necessary, I also believe we need to rethink how we are scaling renewable energy by exploring innovative approaches, such as: 🔬 New R&D frontiers We need to significantly invest in R&D to explore extreme environments for renewable energy. Polar regions, deserts, and deep-sea zones have untapped potential. Imagine solar farms in polar regions where the sun shines continuously for months. 🏙️ Buildings as part of the solution Why rely only on solar farms when every building could generate its own energy? With transparent solar panels technology out there, we can maximize it and turn skyscrapers and homes into renewable energy sources. This would allow millions of buildings worldwide to contribute directly to the grid, without taking up more land or relying on central power plants. 🌊 Tapping into ocean currents Unlike solar and wind, ocean currents are consistent. Submerged turbines in places like the Gulf Stream could provide a reliable, continuous flow of renewable energy, that’s a new and consistent source. The reality is, we need to move beyond just meeting goals and start thinking bigger. These are just a few ways we can expand renewable energy in ways we haven’t fully tapped into yet. IRENA released a new report - "Tracking COP28 outcomes: Tripling renewable power capacity by 2030". Some highlights: - In 2023, 473 gigawatts (GW) was added to the global energy mix accounting for 87% of newly installed capacity. - Despite record renewable power capacity additions, progress in the energy transition is insufficient and its trajectory is markedly off course. - The world’s ability to achieve the tripling target is far from assured, as an additional 7.2 TW of renewable power must be deployed to reach the required 11 TW by 2030. - Annual investments in renewable power generation must surge from USD 570 billion in 2023 to USD 1.55 trillion on average between 2024 and 2030. - Greater international cooperation will be indispensable to ensure financial flows to the Global South and uphold the tripling pledge. - A systemic global energy transition is required to overcome structural barriers impeding progress. #renewableenergy #energytransition #triplingrenewables #BreakthroughAgenda Luciano Caratori High-Level Climate Champions
