Next week is #SaferSleepWeek with the The Lullaby Trust , an annual awareness campaign around reducing sudden infant death syndrome (also known as SIDS). The key message is: Babies should only sleep on their back and somewhere that is firm AND flat, like a firm cot or Moses basket. A baby’s airway or breathing tube can easily block, narrow or fold, making it difficult for them to breathe if they sleep somewhere that isn’t firm and flat. How to survive the first weeks of being a new dad 1. Set a daily check-in with your partner. 2. Take sleep shifts. 3. Be patient. You’re all learning here. 4. Nap as much as you can. Remember, this isn’t forever. In fact, you might end up missing those first few weeks.

For younger babies (ages 5 to 6 months) who are just getting into the rhythm of regular naps, I always recommend using their wake window to gauge when naps should occur during the day. This is the length of time they can be awake before the pressure to sleep builds sufficiently for a nap. Then, when your baby is 6 to 7 months and over, you can start to establish a set nap schedule based on the time of day. Age is just a guide, however. When your baby starts to fall asleep independently and sleeps for at least an hour at a time, it’s a good sign that they’re ready to move to a time-of-day schedule.

It's very important that babies aren't too warm when sleeping, as overheating can increase the risk of cot death. 🚨 Check for these 3 signs that your baby may be too warm. 👇🏻 ⚠️ Their neck or hair looks sweaty, as excessive heat can cause unwanted perspiration. ⚠️ Their cheeks may appear flushed instead of their usual pale complexion. ⚠️ If you feel their chest, neck, back, or tummy and it seems clammy or sweaty, it's a sign they're too hot. If you notice any of these warning signs, open a window or remove an item of clothing straight away. 💡 To give your little one calm, safe sleep, do consider booking a free discovery call with Calm Nights.
