Important to highlight the need to create mosaic of habitats and not remove Bracken entirely. Good grazing management with the right livestock could be the most cost effective and least intrusive way to do this on steep, hard to access land. Although too much Bracken suppresses other plant growth and reduces potential productivity on grazing land, as described, Bracken is needed for particular habitat creation too. And as I have found in my field work, soil under carbon has an elevated concentration of carbon compared with grassland. And though research is limited, could Bracken be underestimated when accounting for carbon sequestration?

A scrubby hedge and autumn-sown bumblebird margin providing an invaluable wildlife corridor alongside this crop of carrots. This particular margin attracts a payment of £747/ha under the 2024 Sustainable Farming Incentive, with an additional £26/100m of hedgerow for getting the flail out less often! The autumn-sown bumblebird margins on this farm are often used together in rotation with spring-sown winter bird food plots and home to an impressive number of grey partridge. Options such as these, as well as tussocky grass margins, annually cultivated areas for arable plants, and pollen and nectar plots, when used in conjunction with one-another across the landscape, can have a far more positive impact on farmland wildlife than if placed in large, isolated blocks. Careful consideration needs to be taken when choosing which options to use where if we are to produce the greatest benefits for wildlife without creating unnecessary hassle and work.

Today I visited Scald End Farm, a 210-acre mixed livestock farm in Thurley, Bedfordshire. Owned by fourth-generation farmers Hazel and Thomas, this farm is a shining example of how farmers are striving to find the balance between food production and nature restoration. The farm has been organically certified since 2008 and participates in a high-level countryside stewardship scheme, implementing various practices to enhance biodiversity. Hazel and Tom are truly entrepreneurial farmers, diversifying their income streams with cottage rentals and actively exploring innovative approaches to farm management. We recorded a super fun podcast episode with great stories around first, best and worst experiences in nature.
