Retiree Buyers Beware: Richard Whitacre transferred his entire 401(k) into an IRA account offering a ‘guaranteed’ 15.25% return. Will he ever see his money again? History: In 2023, Whitacre's, 60-year old, his life took a turn for the worse. He got laid off from a long-time position of employment as an industrial mechanic. Shortly after this, he was diagnosed with colon cancer. Taking a Financial Risk: In March, Whitacre set to put his life back on track by making a single investment and transferred his 401k account worth $763,094.21 into a IRA at 15.25% guaranteed return in a firm called Next Level Holdings. Current Situation: Next Level Holdings, run by Paul Regan, the company failed to send monthly distributions to investors. In August, American IRAs chief executive, Jim Hitt, broke from Regan who was barred for life from acting as a broker in 2004. After nine months of Whitacre's IRA investment, the company sent their clients a notification of "liquidating investments and winding up its affairs." Outcome: "But American IRA’s closure of the accounts didn’t mean investors got their money back." In November, the investors received only a fraction of their investment.
