Welcome September! For this month, A Free Bird is eager to spread the word about Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. For children, cancer diagnosis and treatment can turn their lives upside down, and it is easy to feel overwhelmed by the sudden and rapid changes. We are also dedicated to spreading awareness for several important causes, including Leukemia & Lymphoma, Ovarian, Prostate, Thyroid, and Uterine Cancer. The color of the month is gold, which signifies strength, courage, and resilience. It's often associated with triumph and illumination, making it a fitting symbol for Childhood Cancer Awareness month! Here at A Free Bird Organization, we believe that art and creative expression can be a powerful source of healing for all children affected by cancer. We want to provide these brave young cancer warriors with a comforting space where they can relax and explore their inner talents. In addition, we are also celebrating the venerable art of literature this month! Countless cultures across the world have books written in their own languages, and with the advancement of technology, it has never been easier to appreciate and expand one's literary scope than today. Reading is also an excellent source of inspiration and knowledge, especially for developing future artists. HEALTH is one of the fundamental values of The Ora Lee Smith Cancer Research Foundation and is defined as “the condition of being sound in body, mind, or spirit” by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary. Our commitment to health is built into our mission statement: To change the way cancer is treated and reduce cancer-patient suffering by providing care that is accessible, affordable and effective. Cancer tries to attack our mental, physical, and spiritual health but we fight back. This fight is personal for us, starting with our founder Dr. Hadiyah Green who lost her parents to cancer. Their suffering from cancer and cancer treatments inspired her to design a cancer-killing technology to improve health: Laser-Activated Nano-Therapy (LANT). LANT completely eliminates human tumors in laboratory mice after one 10-minute treatment in just 15 days, without observable side effects, surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy. Limited by funding, not technological advancements, we are ready to move LANT into humans. When you support The Ora Lee Smith Cancer Research Foundation your donations will support our commitment to health by funding LANT human clinical trials. You may be successful... but are you significant? It’s a question I asked my teams often at Merrill Lynch. By many standard definitions, they were very successful. But significant? That’s the real question. To me, significance comes with the lasting impact you leave by giving back in meaningful ways, both professionally and personally. The tireless work of the V Foundation is a constant example of this. The V Foundation recently released the video below highlighting its incredible efforts to cure cancer. As a board member, I’ve found more fulfillment supporting this cause than I ever could have hoped for. My fellow board members now feel like family, and we have been so proud to see the foundation reach a total of $350M in grants supporting cancer research as well as rising scholars in the field. We have been thrilled to watch its scientific advisory committee grow to 23 leading US oncologists, who rigorously review and track the progress of every grant. Cancer touches us all. It took my wife Karen’s father before I had the chance to ask for his blessing to marry her. It took my sister two years ago. We are more committed than ever to keep supporting this fight for a cure. It’s not only the right thing to do… it’s our duty to support the causes we feel passionate about. No matter how small or large a commitment you can make or how many lives you touch, it makes a difference. As you think about ways to give back during your busy career or as you dream up a post-retirement season, I challenge you: Don’t just be successful—be significant. #VFoundation #dontevergiveup #cancerresearch
