Honoured to participated along with six other agricultural and food economics journal editors in a #ICAE2024 panel on the future of publishing in agricultural economics. Major themes were further improving the diversity of representation in journals, both by gender and by country; ensuring strong ethical foundations; and improving the communication of research findings. In my own remarks I emphasised that our discipline is a "big tent" in terms of topic coverage, which extends to the most fundamental challenges facing the humanity: food security, nutrition, farmers' livelihoods, resource use, the environment and climate change. On the other hand, it is relatively focused, bringing the critical perspective of economics to these issues. We cannot find solutions without understanding how people respond to incentives, and without confronting the reality of difficult trade-offs across competing objectives. Unfortunately I see a big disconnect between insightful research at the academic "sharp end" and its uptake by policymakers. We can and must do a better job at narrowing that gap -- if not it will be filled by those proposing simplistic solutions that ignore the economic dimensions, are based on flimsy evidence, or reflect narrow political agendas. Most of the journals are -- like the JAE -- the organs of our professional societies. I believe that identity is an valuable asset for improving the impact of our research, so that new and robust insights work their way into the policy process. The University of Antwerp - Faculty of Business and Economics invites Wim Verbeke, Professor in the Department of Agricultural Economics at UGent, to hold the #FrancquiChair 2023-2024.   Professor Verbeke, an expert in agri-food marketing and consumer behavior with a background in natural (bio-engineering) and social (economic) sciences, studies the behavior of consumers and stakeholders in the agri-food sector. In his inaugural lecture, Professor Verbeke will provide a view from the perspective of agri-food marketing and consumer research on the choices made, the evolution of the research themes and agenda, the insights gained and the new questions that arise about the protein transition. Here is some more detail: postponing the adoption of technology is costly. The technology of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) has been technically available decades ago; however, it´s adoption has been limited due to political reasons resulting in lengthy regulatory process, which slows down the R&D transfer and affects agricultural productivity and food security. Our study projected the impact of R&D transfer speed up and relaxation of regulatory framework on agricultural productivity and food security towards 2050. It also allows to assess important geopolitical consequences of regulatory framework adjustment. Speeding up R&D transfer could bring over 200 billion US$ globally expressed as NPV of GDP benefits.

Living Lab: Simulate, Participate, Understand The GEN-YOU research project results presented at SIDEA - Società Italiana di Economia Agraria Conference in Anacapri. GEN-YOU research project coordinated by the University of Pisa and integrated into the activities of Spoke 1 of OnFoods Foundation, is dedicated to understanding and applying participatory methodologies such as #LivingLabs. A Living Lab serves as a small-scale social experiment within a supply chain or territory, actively involving various stakeholders.
