Welcome to the ultimate workplace circus! It’s a place where the environment is so toxic and suffocating, you might need a gas mask just to get through the day. To add more surprises, this organization gets themselves awarded as a "Great Place to Work," which is so fake. But hey, people fall for it all the time, lured in by the promise of money and the so-called “goodwill” of the company. It’s only after joining that you realize it’s more of a haunted house than a dream job. And the regret? Several years ago, I worked for a CEO who prioritized positivity, and I witnessed firsthand the transformative power of embracing a mindset that assumes positive intent. By instilling this value into our corporate culture and reinforcing it consistently, the CEO cultivated a more collaborative and fulfilling work environment. Understanding that everyone operates with their unique perspectives and motivations, striving for success serves as a common ground that unites us all. Instead of succumbing to cynicism, choosing to seek understanding and empathy when faced with challenges paves the way for growth and progress. It also makes work a lot more satisfying.

In a bustling workplace like ours at Sevenstep, it's easy to get caught up in the daily grind, focusing solely on the tasks at hand. But some of the most valuable moments happen when we take a step back and intentionally create opportunities to interact in new ways. Today was one of those moments. On the day of the NFL Draft (Go Bears!), we hosted our own annual Buddy Draft – a live draft that randomly pairs people together for a year of new connections, fostering friendships and fun over new experiences or shared interests. Jim Becker and Natalie Scheiman knocked it out of the park, leading us through the Draft – costumes, banter and all. As a leader, I'm passionate about making room for serendipitous encounters – moments where individuals from different teams come together, perhaps over a cup of tea, cooking class or city tour. These seemingly small interactions may not directly relate to our bottom line, but they form the fabric of our company culture, weaving bonds that transcend job titles and departments. By carving out time like this, we create a workplace where people feel valued, understood and, most importantly, happy. And a happy team is not only better positioned to deliver exceptional service to our clients but also more likely to stay with us for the long haul. I’ve been reflecting a lot lately on the difference between commitment to purpose versus expectation of comfort, and how that plays out in both our careers and personal lives. Growing up, I had a childhood best friend who signed up for ROTC at North Carolina State University. He was fully aware that after all the training, discipline, and preparation, he would eventually be called to go on tour. And when the time came, I highly doubt he complained or even hesitated. That’s part of the deal when you sign up for the military. It’s about duty, sacrifice, and a larger mission—something bigger than personal comfort. Now, looking at the behavioral health industry, I sometimes wonder why there seems to be such a disconnect. Tasks that may seem small or simple in nature can have huge impacts on a client’s stay, progress, and recovery. Yet, it’s not uncommon to hear grumbling when those tasks are asked of staff members. Here’s the question: Why is there such a resistance to completing necessary tasks in behavioral health, especially when the impact of doing so can directly improve someone’s life? I’m not suggesting we should ignore burnout or undervalue self-care. But there’s something to be said about cultivating a culture of commitment—where every task, no matter how small it seems, is approached with the understanding that it contributes to something bigger: the well-being of those we serve. When my friend signed up for ROTC, he knew there would be challenges and tough moments. And just like him, I think we all need to remind ourselves that the work we do—whether in the military or in behavioral health—is a calling, not just a job. It’s about making a meaningful difference, even when the work isn’t glamorous or easy. At the end of the day, culture matters more than salary.
