POV from this past Saturday from our esteemed partners Vibes and Smiles Inc. ! We broke attendance records once again with 271 total neighbors coming to our work “party-in-the-park” at Guadalupe Gardens. Why is our innovative (and extremely cost effective!!) homeless outreach model such a hit? Because we humans are social animals. Plain and simple. We NEED positive community to thrive — whether we live in a tent or mansion. Not convinced? Come out to the park and you’ll get it, we promise. https://lnkd.in/d3CYXCZx #neighborhoodhandscommunity #vibesandsmiles #homelessoutreach #californiahomelesscrisis #newmodel #socialinnovation #community #communitybuilding #communityovercompetition

In rural communities, compassion knows no bounds. When emergencies strike, it's neighbors who answer the call. 🌾🚒 Whether it's volunteer firefighters, EMTs, or everyday heroes, these acts of service are what keep our communities strong and connected. 💙 Let's honor those who show up not for recognition, but for the love of their community. #FrontlineImpact #VolunteerHeroes #CommunityFirst

Dive into the heartwarming story of a homeless man and a homeless cat who find solace in each other's company. This touching tale is more than just a story; it's a gateway for meaningful conversations about homelessness, loneliness, and the incredible bond between humans and animals. Perfect for teachers and families, this book serves as a compassionate starting point for discussions on how we can better support both homeless individuals and animals. Let's use this story to open up dialogues on empathy, kindness, and the vital role of companionship in our lives. @Kathy Christensen #homeiswheretheheartis #bookrecommendations #empathy #homelessness #animalcompanionship #educationalreads #heartwarmingstory

Last night I sat with a young mum, struggling to survive. What was my purpose - Simply listening to understand It got me thinking about the debate surrounding the relevance of Maslow's Hierarchy of needs in this chaotic world. Yes, some adaptation is necessary, but let's not skim over the basics and the impact to our motivations. Her motivations? > Basic physiological needs of her family - Food and sleep > Safety needs of her children - security and stability For this young mum, all else felt trivial. Remember, Maslow's Hierarchy of needs are built on foundations, and we must first meet the lower level needs before higher needs can be fulfilled. When you are talking to someone whose basic physiological and safety needs are the driving force, it truly puts life into perspective. #motivation #socialimpact

If you want something different, you have to do something different. Helping people experiencing homelessness get the resources, housing and treatment they need isn't a mystery. We know how to do this. What we are lacking is a coordinated effort to bring together our resources to rapidly triage, assess and provide help to the over 10,000 men, women and children living unhoused in our San Diego region. Sunbreak Ranch is a well-thought through concept for providing a safe, temporary place for those living in encampments across our region to relocate to where they can have their basic needs met AND be surrounded by all the services they need in one place. Let's get smart about this San Diego and build Sunbreak Ranch ASAP. Humans are suffering right now, scared for their lives and perishing on our streets. Here's what we need to do: 1. Secure a piece of land in San Diego County that is centrally located (mid-county) and offers space for SunBreak Ranch. 2. Raise funds to cover the construction of SunBreak Ranch and operating/maintenance expenses for 2 years to start (Reach out to SunBreak Ranch leadership for the amount they need). 3. Build the site. 4. Open it up for those experiencing homelessness. 5. Provide triage services, temporary housing and a safe, dignified community for these individuals and families to rest, heal, rebuild trust and discover a path for their life off the streets. 6. Help these individuals find jobs, healthcare services, education, long-term care or another path based on their individual circumstances. 7. Provide compassionate, healing support and inspiration. I'm in to help Sunset Ranch accomplish its goals. Are you? #sunsetranch #sandiego #homelessness #endinghomelessness #wecandothis Drew Moser John (J.C.) Peterson HomeAid San Diego HomeAid

How can Love change the way we see the world ? Every so often something comes along that reignites a love for what you do, recently our team was able to contribute to a Big conversation in a Little way. Colony 47 came to GHD with an idea to help solve Youth Homelessness in Tasmania through the potential purchase of the Fountainside Hotel. Whilst recognising that a not-for-profit provider would struggle to be economically competitive in the Expression of Interest process for this property, Colony 47’s Dianne Underwood and Angela Abbott were keen to try to find a way for stakeholders and decision makers to see things differently. Introduced by Bill Lawson, founder of the Beacon Foundation, the GHD Future Communities' Loveable team; myself, Andrew Smith and Michala Lander helped put together a submission to support the prospectus. Our work told a different story than most, where this place was one that could change lives. It’s not just a room and shelter…. instead it’s a space that fosters a sense of belonging, connectedness and hope. It’s an opportunity to co-design a space with care, sensitivity, sustainability, and respect. A place that functions as a place of healing, kindness, wellbeing, and transformation. This work supports Colony 47 to pursue some of their aspirational strategic goals in delivering on their purpose to end youth homelessness and building a better future for young Tasmanians. It has enabled them to confidently have strategic discussions with key stakeholders who can provide capital funding, the response from the Tasmanian Community has also been very supportive. Maybe Love can change how we see the world ? #futurecommunities #loveable #Colony47

Good advice on bumblebees habitats... 🌼 keep some long grass for ground nesting bees. 🌼fill a birdbox with dry material such as laves and dead grasses for those that like nesting up high. 🌼 keep areas of your border undisturbed for those that like nesting in the ground.
Bumblebee queens are on a mission to find somewhere to nest – and they urgently need your help 👑 #BeeTheChange this spring by providing nest sites for homeless bumblebees 🐝 Discover how you can help 👉 https://ow.ly/T1SM50QOBwm

Remember when borrowing a cup of sugar from a neighbor was normal? Now, it feels like we’ve lost that sense of community. We’ve become so disconnected, caught up in our own worlds, that many of us don’t even know the people living next door. This growing isolation isn’t just about sugar; it’s about losing the bonds that hold us together. Imagine what could happen if we started reaching out again—building relationships. That’s the beauty of #CanaVillage! It’s not just going to be 500 tiny homes to house the homeless. It’s going to be 500 tiny homes set up into 12 cul de sac neighborhoods with common areas to encourage interactions and relationships. It’s time to rediscover the power of community. Let’s break down the walls and connect with those around us! #CommunityMatters #StrongerTogether #RebuildConnection www.MatthewsLight.org

Hey hive mind, does anyone have a resource written by formerly homeless persons, something to answer the question “I’m about to be homeless and I am scared?” As someone who watches Portland housing and roommate pages, I see this question a lot. The responses are always along the lines of resources that are not there and hand wringing. But isn’t there a practical guide somewhere, like this is going to happen, here is how to plan and get out as fast as possible? It could say things like 1) you’re not alone 2) it is okay to be scared 3) make a plan 4) sell vs storage 5) get on a shelter waitlist 6) how to find a good shelter I was honestly surprised not to be able to find this on google.
