It was an honor to co-facilitate this session with Tia Cintron HMA's Managing Director for Housing Supports and Services. It was a great discussion. Here are a few snippets of actions you can take to advance healthcare and housing: 1) develop shared language; 2) build trust among partners; 3) understand housing is healthcare; 4) employ people who have lived experience/were previously unhoused; 5) Contact Enterprise Community Partners or contact Tia Cintron to advance housing in your community. 6) "think about the most you can do; think about the least you can do; go do something!" Jennifer Ho
"We are going through the deepest housing crisis that I have seen in three decades of working in housing and community development. New and innovative models are emerging to adapt to the current crisis, but we know - we have the data - that Housing First works for the vast majority of people." - Shaun Donovan Enterprise Community Partners #HMACon2024

When I first started in my job around 6 and a half years ago, the term place-based had begun emerging as a new way of working. Government, human services and academia were all discussing ways they could do things differently and involve communities in 'place'. For Neighbourhood Centres, it was all really seen as a return to the way we had always been working. From Settlement Houses in the late 1800s, to post-war memorial community centres in the 1930s, to the rise of Neighbourhood Houses and Centres during the Australian Assistance Plan in the 1970s, we've always been place-based in our approach and led by communities. As the term becomes more popular (and funding becomes available for it), more and more organisations are stating they are place-based in approach. But there seems to be a range of definitions about what this means. In the new shared vision for Neighbourhood Centres, we are described as being place-based and community-led. In the context of so many definitions, we wanted to articulate what this means for our sector and those wishing to work with us. Our position paper articulates what we mean by place and how we are community-led. We unpack how this relates to core community development approaches that are unique to the sector. But we also unpack what place-based community-led work means for procurement (including new Neighbouhood Centre procurement), training and education, collective impact models and the way that state-wide initiatives are rolled out through the sector.

How “public” is public comment? It’s clear from the results of our community engagement survey that the way our industry is gathering public comments isn’t working – it’s time-intensive and ineffective. To tackle the housing crisis, we need to embrace new and innovative ways of engaging community members. Most community members have (limited) time to offer constructive feedback, but not the time to attend a 3-hour public meeting. With staff time being the reported biggest barrier to community engagement, we need tools that not only reach more people, but also streamline the reporting and analysis. Check out this year’s survey report to learn what our network has to say about the challenges they face around community engagement, and our key takeaways.
The results of our 2024 community engagement survey are in, and of the 90 real estate developers and planners who responded, ⅔ said that affordable and supportive housing will be their most active projects in the next 6 months – but that these are also the most challenging projects for community engagement. Given the current housing crisis, it’s crucial to look beyond the strategies respondents identified as ineffective to activate more community members and remove risk. Achieving success requires planners and developers to utilize translation tools, offer opportunities to engage that aren’t limited to a single point in time, and clearly show how community feedback will be/has been incorporated into project plans. BUILDING COMMUNITIES THE SCDC WAY The Community Development Process involves creating and implementing plans to enhance the lives of people in a community. This process includes steps such as conducting research, setting objectives, engaging stakeholders, designing projects, monitoring progress, and evaluating outcomes. Each step is crucial to ensuring the success of any community improvements. Effective community development can have numerous positive impacts, including improved infrastructure, better access to services, enhanced public safety, more diverse job opportunities, and increased social capital. It also helps unite local residents from various backgrounds, fostering stronger relationships within the community. Ultimately, good community development can provide lasting benefits for everyone involved. The SCDC community development process is superior because it focuses on strengthening multifamily communities to make them feel more like single-family homes and improving the lives of their residents. It addresses the individual needs of community members and provides access to recreational activities that encourage civic engagement and participation. SCDC's community development projects will also lead to economic growth, job creation, and increased public engagement. Additionally, we promote collaboration between different organizations and individuals to drive sustainable change. Our apartment investor-purchase program is till available for a limited time.
