Colour gemstones are at times an under-appreciated segment of the jewellery industry. In truth, they’re currently enjoying somewhat of a boom, particularly pearls and the “big three” – rubies, sapphires and emeralds. Prices have increased in the past year and continue to do so due to rising consumer interest and supply constraints. But their value transcends just price, as we must also consider their cultural legacy spanning centuries. Provenance is also a feature of the gemstone market, particularly for emeralds where it is possible to prove from which mine or region a stone originated. Consumers are giving more attention to the big three but also to alternative gemstones of similar colours which are maybe more affordable. For example, red spinel has a comparable look to rubies. There are many such examples. That’s partly why I love the colour gemstone market. The options are endless, leaving so much room for creativity both for the trade and consumers. I’ve experienced that myself in bringing Zen Diamonds to India. There’s such a beautiful interplay between colour gems and diamonds in our gemstones collection. India plays an important role in the gemstone market, both as a manufacturing centre and a significant consumer market. Exports of colour gemstones grew 17% to INR 3.96 billion ($478.6 million) in fiscal year that ended March 31, 2024, according to the Gem And Jewellery Export Promotion CouncilÊ(Gjepc) That’s well above pre-Covid levels. It may be difficult to match those numbers this year and we saw a decline in April. But that doesn’t take away the opportunity that this segment of the market presents. I’m excited to see how it evolves as more consumers become aware of the magical world of gemstones. PS, what’s your favourite gemstone and why? #GemStones #Jewellery #DiamondIndustry
Favorite gemstone has to be chrysoprase or carved jade. I love them all but it’s their color that attracts me and color is so subjective and personal. It’s what makes colored stones sometimes tricky for sales people. I am happy to see they are having a renaissance. They have so much to offer. I also believe people are becoming more interested in their historical and cultural meanings-what they have meant and represented to cultures through time. At least for me, this is true! Thank you for this great post!
Thanks for sharing these insights, I love an emerald myself. The elegance is undoubtable and just cannot be beaten. Only by a clear natural diamond.
Loving the colourful play of all stone. Especially appreciating the use of imperial jadeite with precious gemstones
Rubies are mine, just like the red, though a nice Spinel is a close second.
Do you have Red Diamond .Please let me know
