Most young people in Canada struggling with their mental health don’t receive the support they need. Educational programs can change that. But too few young people get access to that education early enough. This Mental Health Week, here’s how you can help: ⭐️ Use the power of peer-to-peer education to reach youth. Help normalize the conversation by bringing a certified Jack Talks Speakers to your community to teach vital mental health education in a way that speaks to youth. 🤝 Create spaces for connection among young people. We turn to the people around us when times are tough – they listen, validate, and help us get the support we need. We're so excited to be partnering with 80+ school safety professionals throughout the Kent ISD today to provide a day-long, evidence-based training surrounding Youth Mental Health First Aide(Y-MHFA). The need for more support has never been greater, as national statistics show startling considerations: • One in six youth and adolescents will experience a mental health condition in any given time; • Nearly half of teens (44%) report feeling persistently sad and hopeless; and • 50% of all mental illnesses begin by age 14, and 75% by the mid-20s. Hope Network has been instrumental in deploying the Mental Health Education Project (MHEP) across West Michigan. The overarching goal of the program is to train individuals to recognize the signs and symptoms of mental disorders, how to safely de-escalate crisis situations involving individuals with a mental illness, to provide education on resources and services available in the community for individuals with a mental illness, and how to link them to such resources and services. #MentalHealth #MentalHealthFirstAid

During #SuicidePreventionMonth, it is imperative that we, as high school counselors and educators, intensify our efforts to raise awareness about suicide prevention by utilizing the most current research and resources available. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) provides a wealth of information aimed at enhancing our understanding of mental health, recognizing warning signs, and delivering effective support to students and families. Research consistently shows that early identification of mental health issues and timely intervention are critical in preventing suicide. 90% of individuals who die by suicide have experienced mental health conditions. By integrating evidence-based practices into our counseling strategies, we can better address the complex needs of our students. When we talk about mental health, we often think about adults, but every day children and young people across the UK struggle with their mental health too 💚 This week is #childrensmentalhealthweek (5th-11th February) and the theme this year is ‘My Voice Matters'🧒💬 The 'My Voice Matters' campaign is all about empowering children and young people by providing them with the tools they need to express themselves. "When we feel empowered, there’s a positive impact on our wellbeing. Children who feel that their voices are heard and can make a difference, have a greater sense of community and self-esteem." 🗣 Place2Be launched the first-ever Children's Mental Health Week in 2015 "to empower, equip and give a voice to every child across the UK." Their approach is to "intervene early to prevent life-long mental health issues" which they do by... ⭐ Providing early support - spotting mental health problems before they develop and helping children and young people cope with challenges throughout their lives, ⭐ Using an effective therapeutic approach - backed by research that combines several ways of working, ⭐ Offering a range of mental health support services - including advice and support for families and school staff, to build resilience and raise awareness of mental health across a whole school community. Place2Be was founded in 1994 by Dame Benny Refson DBE after being inspired by a Family Service Unit (FSU) project in Southwark called The Place to Be which had placed a counsellor in a primary school.
