Don't let yourself be railroaded by an unscrupulous recruiter! Thankfully, you can spot these types a mile off: 1. They FEEL off. Trust your Spidey Senses. 2. They DON'T listen. 3. They CAN'T answer questions. 4. What little information they give you DOES NOT stand up to scrutiny. 5. They aren't working for QED Legal LLP If you're prepared to put your career in someone's hands, make sure it's the right person. That likely isn't the person that sent you a copy and pasted LinkedIn message they probably sent to 72 other people. Make sure you get it right. #legalrecruitment #recruitment #lawjobs #legalcareers

Difference between being a lawyer and a legal recruiter? When your "message light" is blinking, you get excited. On the other hand, when you are a lawyer....ugh. When I was a junior litigator and came into the office in the morning saw my phone my VM message light blinking (landline! This was 2003, I'm old), I would be bummed. It was never something good. Discovery issue? Deposition rescheduled. New emergency assignment. Etc. When you are a recruiter, more often than not it means 1) new candidate; 2) existing law firm client that loves you giving you an unlisted job; 3) new in-house job at cool start-up; 4) "hey buddy, it's been awhile, I saw a new job on your world famous Whistler Partners newsletter that I'm interested in...." Sure, we have our share of problem VM's, "I'm turning down the offer," "the candidate didn't show up on the first day of work" (no really, this actually happened to a recruiter at a shop I used to work at!), "I've changed my mind about taking the interview" etc. But those problems are way more fun than interrogatories requests, due diligence questions, learning you will be sleeping in the office overnight on a deal, last minute motion the day before Xmas (that happened to me at a firm). Recruiting is fun. Law firm partners are expected to originate and then have to do the all the legal work. Yuck. Legal recruiters just originate and the lawyers we place end up doing the legal work. Yeah. #whistlerpartners #happylawyersclub

This is SO important. When you hit Senior Associate level and are considering what's next, it's time to pick an agent, a consultant, an ACTUAL advocate, NOT just a random recruiter. You've fee earned for years. Your skillset is reaching it's peak. And you add ENORMOUS value to any firm you will join. So you need an agent that will advocate for you. That lays out in detail, prior to you ever meeting the firm, why YOU are the person for THEM. Not one that just spams your CV to a random inbox. We ABHOR that approach at QED Legal LLP And we INSIST that you pick your agent wisely. But we can't do that for you. But what we can do is offer some suggestions on how: 1. Ask questions. If they can't answer them, maybe they aren't for you. 2. Stay in control. Yes, hear out what your recruiter has to stay, but if they're insistent on pushing you in a direction you DON'T want to go, hold firm. 3. Ask around. Do your due diligence. #legalrecruitment #lawjobs #legalcareers #legaljobs

What sets you apart? When faced with two equally qualified lawyers, employers will often look beyond the CV at who will be a better "team fit". You should pay attention to essential soft skills like communication, teamwork, and adaptability when evaluating potential employers. Think about how your interpersonal strengths align with the team's dynamics and the company culture. Often, it's these skills that help you stand out.
