Want to know what is happening in the world of entertainment today? The article in the Los Angeles Times today (6/10) outlines how "The Audience has moved on..." Considering that so much of Los Angeles is dependent on a healthy entertainment community, it is a little disconcerting where this business sector may be headed. I hope you can open the article. It is very informative regarding trends and how the digital world is impacting what we watch and listen to and how we do it.

What’s disrupting the future for entertainment industry workers is much like what began convulsing U.S. manufacturing decades ago: new technology that has transformed the business and reduced the need for workers, as well as the rise of cheaper production sites elsewhere in the U.S. and abroad. Nothing comes close to the breadth and depth of the industry’s economic crisis today except what happened in the early 1950s, another period of technological upheaval when television became ubiquitous in American homes. Television hit as federal antitrust lawsuits broke up studios’ control over theaters. By the end of that decade, movie attendance had fallen by more than half from its peak in 1948, when some 90 million Americans, about two-thirds of the population, went to the movies every week, according to author Edward Jay Epstein in his book “The Hollywood Economist.” But what’s different this time is that the threat is coming from multiple fronts.

The TCA press tour, a biannual event dating back to the 1970s, involves companies spending significant sums to participate, filling panels with talent and providing meals. When successful, it fosters fruitful conversations and boosts viewership. However, participation is waning due to frustrations with the format, budget cuts, and the shift away from in-person gatherings. The latest cycle ended on July 17 after just eight days, with significant streamers like Netflix, Apple, and Amazon absent and no programming executives facing the press. #TCA #TelevisionCritics #PressTour #TVIndustry #EntertainmentNews #MediaTrends #TVPress #Broadcasting #CriticsTour #TelevisionEvents

#NZ Live: Stuff’s 6pm news bulletin to be ‘new, innovative product’, owner says 👁️Stuff.co.nz Live: New name, new feel for Stuff's 6pm bulletin on Three https://lnkd.in/ghgjT24S New name, new feel for new 6pm bulletin Expect a new name and a new feel when Stuff takes over the 6pm news on Three, Stuff owner and publisher Sinead Boucher says. Stuff has announced today that it will provide a news service for Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) from July. “I’m really excited about what we’ll be able to create together and what we’re going to be able to deliver to New Zealanders,” Boucher said in an interview after the announcement. “We have a proven track record of modernising, changing and being at the edge of what you can do with our own organisation, and we’re hungry to bring some of that innovation and freshness to Warner Bros.” 👉In Media News Today: https://lnkd.in/gYQXdAAe 🦉Short on details so far and already receiving a mixed response: relief from some and some skepticism from Mark Jennings, former TV3 head, that the claim of ‘innovation’ remains to be seen and won’t come cheap. He disputes the Stuff owner’s claim that Stuff is not getting into ongoing television saying that that is precisely what one hour of news on weekdays and 30 minutes on Saturdays and Sundays is. He wonders how long this arrangement will last. Staffing levels will be heavily cut. Good luck to them. NZ must have alternative journalistic voices on television. Vital for a healthy thriving democracy. #newzealand #democracy #nznewsmedia #6pmnews #newsdeal #journalism

Swinging for the Fences for New Readers I’ve been seeing more and more creators taking to different platforms to get eyes on their books, which is great! One thing I’ve seen effective is this: Think outside the box. As part of the publicity team at Marvel, we started talks with a television show as part of a collaboration. The show: Deal or No Deal. This was when it was at its peak in ratings and Uncanny X-Men was reaching its milestone 500th issue. The deal (no pun intended) was that if the contestant reached a benchmark amount in earnings, he would be drawn into Uncanny X-Men 500. He was a massive comic fan and this was a once-in-a-lifetime offer. To sweeten the pot, the Deal or No Deal came back out in Storm outfits, our most popular female character at the time. He took the deal, and is immortalized in the pages of the issue. Bam, right there, we went way outside the box and the mainstream media even picked up the news. The point of this is to really think about going outside the normal channels. Think big. Think unique. Then swing for the fences. The worst thing that can happen is they say “No deal.” That pun was intended. #Comics #GraphicNovels #Marketing #Publicity #TV

News or entertainment? It makes a difference because a news outlet is protected by certain laws that wouldn't cover entertainment. Entertainment is relative. When entertainment pretends it is news, there should be accountability. MOST in the public arena cry about democracy. They are for it. Their adversary threatens it and will destroy it. One element of a democracy is freedom of expression. Another right that is defended when it suits. It is a freedom to call for the genocide of Jews, even when verbal becomes spitting, intimidating with menace, and crowding. On their programming though, one voice/their opinion paraded as truth disinvites a different view. On the rare occasion a guest of another thought process is allowed air time, their "mike" might get shut down. In this definition of democracy, tolerating another point of view and allowing YOU, THE VIEWER to hear more than one side (their opinion) isn't happening. An example: Chris Licht, the short-lived producer hired to shore up CNN ratings invited Mr. Trump for a town hall. GASP. Was it a month later, he was out? CNN is hosting the 6/27 debate. Jake and Dana, who shut off Ms. Leavitt's mike because their sensibilities couldn't handle her truth, are moderating the debate. Do we know if Mr. Biden, hard at work REHEARSING, has received the questions ahead of the debate? What we do know is, if your thinking matches theirs, you are the right team - THE ONLY TEAM. How's that for democracy? If one wishes to practice listening and tolerating- try FOX NEWS. More often than not, in a discussion, they include employees from both parties. That is freedom of speech and that is a medium where if one wishes, they can become informed with multi- faceted approaches. Respected to deliberate and decide for yourself!!
