It's less than two-weeks to go until this year's European Biosolids & Bioresources Conference & Exhibition conference. This year, I'm presenting on behalf of team with extensive experience of methane emissions from anaerobic digestion. I'll be discussing Biomethane Potential (BMP), Residual Biogas Potential (RBP) testing, the Code of Practice for Agriculture Use of Sewage Sludge, PAS 110 (2010 and 2014 editions), designing for minimising residual biogas, and what are sensible upper limits for permitting residual biogas. Could algae be the solution to carbon dioxide waste? How the two are connected might be unclear but algae may come to play an essential role in carbon offset. Among the people inspecting this connection is Tommy Holt, a student of the #MasterofEngineeringLeadership in #SustainableProcessEngineering. Tommy Holt was part of a team working with a #greentechnology supplier that has developed #bioreactors which turn carbon dioxide into algae and other commercially valuable products. “We analyzed the environmental impact of capturing carbon dioxide emitted from a hypothetical brewery located in Alberta and using it as a feedstock to grow protein-rich algae that could then be sold as animal feed,” said Tommy. This is where things got complicated: because the brewery is located in Alberta in a facility that would be using electricity generated from a power plant fuelled by natural gas, the process would ultimately emit more carbon dioxide emissions than what could be captured from the company’s technology. The technology works but as Tommy notes, the real solution to this problem will have to involve some policy change as well. One of the takeaways of this project and the course as a whole was just how challenging decarbonization is, and how important vigilant analysis is in assessing new technologies. “You need to look at the big picture and you need to have the technical and economic analytical skills to be able to carefully analyze solutions to ensure they are achieving the desired impact,” he says. 🔋🚌 Can waste truly power our future? Coming together for sustainability, SEMPRE-BIO PROJECT participated in training action #10 of the B-WaterSmart Project, a fellow Horizon Europe initiative, on March 26th. Guided by our project coordinator, Alejandra Córdova Valencia, our team had the opportunity to share insights from our journey in energy recovery within wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). During the training, SEMPRE-BIO PROJECT presented their innovative combination of technologies implemented in CS1 that transform biogas streams from WWTP into biomethane, significantly enhancing energy recovery efforts.
