The Effect of Fertilization on the Structure of the Aboveground Biomass of Several Cultivars of Jerusalem Artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus L.) by Dominika Skiba, Elvyra Jariene, Piotr Barbaś, Barbara Krochmal-Marczak,  Barbara Sawicka JA (Jerusalem artichoke) cultivars react differently to mineral fertilization. Hence, the aim of this study was to assess the effect of mineral fertilization on the yield and yield structure of this species in terms of its aboveground biomass. The research was based on a field experiment carried out in 2016–2018 in Central and Eastern Poland using the randomized subblock method, in a split-split-plot-dependent system. The factors of the first-order experiment were the cultivars of Jerusalem artichoke (JA) (‘Albik’, ‘Rubik’ and ‘Violet de Renes’), while the second-order factors were differentiated mineral fertilizers (N0P0K0 as a control object and P43, K124, N100, P43K124, N50P43K124m N100P43K124, and N150P43K124) converted to their elemental forms compared with the full dose of manure. The third-order factors were nitrogen forms, including ammonium nitrate and amide. The aboveground biomass yield and its structure were determined. The tested cultivars did not differ significantly in yield, but had different yield structures. The use of mineral fertilization brought measurable effects in the form of an increase in the yield of aboveground biomass. The ‘Albik’ cultivar responded best to mineral fertilization, with the highest yield of aboveground biomass being obtained after applying 150 kg N ha−1 in the form of ammonium nitrate against the background of constant phosphorus–potassium fertilization. The ‘Rubik’ cultivar responded most favorably to the addition of 50 kg N ha−1 in the amide form against the background of phosphorus–potassium fertilization, while the ‘Violet de Renes’ cultivar produced the highest yield of aboveground biomass after the application of 100 kg N ha−1 in the amide form, including PK fertilization. Cover crops can play a significant role in managing nutrients in sandy soils, particularly in scavenging nitrogen to regulate nutrient release in agricultural ecosystems. The effectiveness of cover crops often depends on the quality and quantity of biomass they produce. Therefore, evaluating biomass production can also help with nutrient management. Spectral data and vegetation indices can be valuable for estimating canopy properties and potentially predicting the benefits of cover crops. In this technical note, we examine how the sudangrass cover crop responded to residual nitrogen fertilizer applied to corn and how spectral data effectively (or not) captured its growth and impact on soil health indicators.

New Publication Alert As co-author, I am delighted to share our recent paper titled: " Soil-Specific Calibration Using Plate Compression Filling Technique and Monitoring Soil Biomass Degradation Based on Dielectric Properties" published in Agriculture (IF= 3.6) Paper Summary: Accurate soil water content (SWC) estimation is crucial for effective irrigation management and maximizing crop yields. Although dielectric property-based SWC measurements are widely used, their accuracy is still affected by soil variability, soil–sensor contact, and other factors, making developing convenient and accurate soil-specific calibration methods a major challenge. This study aims to propose a plate compression filling technique for soil-specific calibrations and to monitor the extent of soil biomass degradation using dielectric properties. Before and after biodegradation, dielectric measurements of quartz sand and silt loam were made at seven different water contents with three different filling techniques. A third-order polynomial fitting equation explaining the dependence of the dielectric constant on the volumetric water content was obtained using the least-squares method. According to experimental results, the suggested plate compression filling method has a maximum mean bias error (MBE) of less than 0.5%. Depending on the water content, silt loam’s dielectric characteristics change significantly before and after biodegradation. The best water content, measured in gravimetric units, to encourage the decomposition of biomass was discovered to be 24%. It has been demonstrated that the plate compression filling method serves as a simple, convenient, and accurate alternative to the uniform compaction method, while the dielectric method is a reliable indicator for evaluating biomass degradation.
