Public health faces strong headwinds. I was honored to join Michelle Rathman for her podcast, discussing the communication challenges as a new president takes office. (If you don’t already subscribe to The Rural Impact Podcast & Publishing, I’d highly recommend doing so.) I offered several ideas during my podcast conversation with Michelle, including: 1/ Public health leaders need to focus almost as much on messengers as they do on messages. There are trusted people in our states and communities who can be helpful messengers on vaccines, water fluoridation and other topics. 2/ Public health communicators must avoid the political fray by using language that is not "heard" as partisan. I give a couple of examples of commonly used public health terms that can push the wrong button. 3/ Lean on physicians, dentists and behavioral health clinicians in your states and communities. Encourage them to have brief conversations with patients about public health issues. It was also great that Michelle used the second half of her podcast to talk with Dr. Brian C. Castrucci, DrPH, MA, a savvy and thoughtful voice for health equity who is CEO of de Beaumont Foundation. Brian made a compelling point about how the shrinking health care infrastructure in rural areas has a negative impact on economic developments. “It’s really hard to say, ‘Well, I’m going to move to this place for a job’ knowing I don’t have any access to [Ob-Gyns] or cardiac care,” he said. #publichealth #misinformation #disinformation #vaccines #RFKJr #healthpolicy #healthcommunication #oralhealth #fluoridation #healthpromotion

Do you know the difference between misinformation and disinformation? In public health, both are harmful, and the latter is designed to create chaos, profit from, power grab, manipulate, and mislead. In this episode, Michelle Rathman sat down with Matt Jacob, a Public Health Communication expert, and Brian C. Castrucci, DrPH, MA, president and CEO of de Beaumont Foundation to connect the dots between disinformation, public health, and policy, specifically discussing what the next administration's picks for U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention could mean for vaccines, research, health equity, and the impacts on rural public health practitioners and departments. I didn't really understand public health, or it's critical importance, until I started working for the state health department. I wanted to share an upcoming Bloomberg Media documentary with you all, The Invisible Shield. Its focus is on the importance of public health – as it says early in the preview, “Public health saved your life today, and you didn’t even know it.” Washington State, including two of our local health jurisdictions, Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department and Okanogan Public Health District, are featured as well as many state, federal, and other local partners. This is a four-part series, first premiered on March 26. All episodes will be aired on PBS as well as available for streaming. Please help us spread the word and show gratitude and appreciation for public health! (Conveniently right before National Public Health Week!) More info can be found here. Each one-hour episode focuses on a different topic: 1. The Old Playbook (the history of public health). 2. Follow The Data (the essential role of data in public health). 3. Inoculation & Inequity (disinformation, skepticism, and distrust). 4. The New Playbook (where we go from here). “Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health is the most shocking and inhumane.” — Martin Luther King Jr. https://lnkd.in/dbXG458h
