New research article publication dedicated to Prof. Em. Seshadri Seetharaman on the occasion of his 80th birthday   Title: Effect of SiO2 and Al2O3 on the Thermophysical Properties and the Foaming Index of Electric Arc Interface Slag from the Production of Construction Steel   This study investigates the viscosity, density, and surface tension of electric arc furnace (EAF) from the construction steel manufacturing. SiO2 and Al2O3 increase slag viscosity and decrease density, with SiO2 lowering surface tension while Al2O3 raising it. As a #metallurgist, I’ve always been fascinated by how materials evolve, not just in the lab but in nature itself. Here lately at IXRF Systems, we have been looking at a lot of #mineralogical samples with #microXRF, and it's incredible how much they mirror what we see in metal alloys. Using advanced spectroscopic techniques like #microXRF, we can visualize the migration of elements in minerals and see distinct phases—just as we map the microstructure in metal alloys after heat treatment or alloying or exposure to harsh environments. These elemental maps reveal how minerals interact and evolve over time, forming unique boundaries and patterns that tell the story of their formation. The overlap is fascinating: whether in a geological specimen or a high-performance alloy, elemental interactions dictate the material’s performance and structure.
