In a new INSIDE PHILANTHROPY story by Sarah Henry, Arianna Jimenez reminds us that building democracy doesn’t end on Election Day. Jimenez, senior vice president for democracy, gender and racial justice at THE JPB FOUNDATION says, “without longer-term engagement in states and communities, there’s not an opportunity to build the kind of power necessary to build a strong democracy that meets the needs of all communities.” JPB supports NEO’s Four Freedoms Fund which has been mobilizing resources to the “Haitian community in Ohio that’s been subject to extremist violence” and many of the groups mentioned here doing the extraordinary work are #NEOPartners and Four Freedoms Fund grantees: National Korean American Service & Education Consortium (NAKASEC) national network comprising five grassroots groups that support and empower the Asian American community #ISAIAH in Minnesota is a great example of what an organization building for a more healthy democracy looks like. They work in deep relationship with communities, year over year. #LUCHA in Arizona. They have done deep and long-lasting work with immigrant communities there, in particular, Latino immigrants. + Arizona Center for Empowerment https://lnkd.in/gc_DbvGE

I was interviewed for a piece about JPB's democracy work. I highlight some of the civic engagement organizations we are supporting and make the case that philanthropy must support base building, power building organizations every year, not just in election years. I talk about the need to balance attending to the acute challenges facing our democracy with the chronic ones, the need for long term vision and plans oriented toward building power for people who have been denied it, and JPB’s work reimagining a multiracial democracy that works for all of us. You can find the piece here:

Canadians (and many people around the world) feel the impact of American elections, especially when it comes to concerns about inaction on global climate change. A colleague shared with me this "Post Election Day Poem". It makes me grateful for everyone who shows up for Earth and our communities each and every day. Please read the poem if you need that extra boost today, or if you simply feel defeated. Read it if you need to be reminded that our efforts aren't lost and that there is so much good work happening all over the world, including within the United States. Many thanks to Rebecca Faulkner for these important words. HAPPENING NOW: Nonprofits Threatened by Trump & House GOP. Must read. President-Elect Trump and his enablers are working to quickly pass a bill that would end the independence of our nonprofit sector, and gut Freedom of Speech, Freedom of the Press, and Freedom of Assembly. The bill would enable Trump to wipe out citizen opposition to his agenda by labeling peaceful protestors and advocates as “terrorists”, and then shutting down any nonprofits that are associated with those protests and advocates. The bill, H.R. 9495, would allow Trump’s hand-selected Secretary of the Treasury to unilaterally _declare_ any nonprofit a “terrorist supporting organization” and, in doing this, terminate their tax-exempt status. There would be a notification letter and then the organization would have to spend time and money to prove they are not a “terrorist-supporting organization.” Even if they don’t pass this, the story is that they are TRYING to pass this! This is the first piece of legislation introduced by the MAGA 2.0 administration. And it’s distinctly anti-American. The ACLU has sent a letter to House leaders from 120 nonprofits opposing this bill. Here’s the letter: https://lnkd.in/exSmYWqV The Rachel Maddow Show covered this bill. Maddow put it in context of dictator tactics, and gave the example of Trump’s ally, Vladimir Putin, who had successfully shut down civil society groups who dare oppose him or his agenda, or event memorialized past oppression by the Russian government under Stalin. The segment is at the end of her Monday, Nov. 11 episode. Listen at minute mark 37:53. Here it is free and easy to access on Apple Podcasts: https://lnkd.in/etrq9qTz Rolling Stone did a story: https://lnkd.in/eddHqrvT. And The Intercept as well: https://lnkd.in/enny-s4j. Other press should pick up ASAP! Where is The The New York Times and David Fahrenthold on this?! The Chronicle of Philanthropy, Inside Philanthropy, The NonProfit Times, The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Chicago Tribune, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The New Yorker, The Atlantic? It would be easy for this stealth pre-inauguration effort to go largely unnoticed or unremarked upon because they’re using anti-terrorism as a cover. But it would have MAJOR ripple effects not just for nonprofits, but for our society. They could shut down your place of worship; your college; your ACLU chapter; your community-based organization; your foundation or your funder. Beyond that, it would create fear of speaking out by individuals and organizations. It would undermine the American way of life — the freedom to say what you think without fear of reprisal; the freedom to create and join groups that advocate for your beliefs. We must not let this happen.

The impact this will have on organizations who advocate for marginalized communities will be detrimental. This will also make this giving season even more cutthroat because, like our corporate counterparts who are preparing for the effects of the expected tariffs, nonprofits will need as much funding as they can get to cushion what could be some lean years. Only the best of the best will survive. The truth is, the marketing for nonprofits is starting to look like every other scam email, direct mail, phone call or advertisement that people are getting. (Send $10 to help this young child's cancer is starting to sound oddly like the African Prince who needed money to save his country. 🤔 ) That designation is the only thing nonprofits have that shows they are valid. (Not forgetting the obvious financial benefits like access to government grants, no taxes and major discounts from major vendors.) No matter how great the cause or how much work they are doing for the world, the majority of nonprofits would not make it. They go against the very thing they don't want. The truth. The truth that there are homeless people who need help. There are children and women being trafficked right in our backyards. Indigenous people who are still being treated like third class citizens on land that their ancestors roamed freely. And the education system that is leaving behind most people who don't identify as white. However, to tell the truth, you must speak out against the government who is actively going against the thing you are fighting for. Could this be the end of the modern day nonprofit structure? #nonprofits #givingseason #nonprofitmarketing #diversityandinclusion

This is unfolding now, and it’s not surprising. Anyone who read Project 2025 saw this agenda clearly laid out. It’s encouraging that so many nonprofits and foundations came together within 24 hours of the election results in solidarity. Now, we must face the reality that Project 2025 is the roadmap. The question is: what will be our collective response? I'll say what it can't be: finger-pointing and hand-wringing. #PROJECT2025

Nonprofit organisations face a range of threats. One of the most under-appreciated? Legal and operating environments, and restrictions they face in the name of counter-terrorism and anti-money laundering. After the 9/11 attacks, the US banking system pushed for regulatory reforms throughout the global banking system. Broad application of such regulations has had a range of unintended consequences for legitimate civil society organisations, both in the US and around the world. Intentional use of such restrictions to restrict civic space is unfortunately a very common and often depressingly effective tactic in many countries. I have seen in real time how difficult if not impossible it becomes for nonprofits to operate in such contexts and how quickly threats to fundamental freedoms ratchet up. Here are some helpful resources for folks in the US and elsewhere who may be new to such challenges: As an intro to key issues and terms, The New Humanitarian article by Zach Theiler "How vague money-laundering and counter-terror rules slow aid": https://lnkd.in/gD7XQ69C The Financial Action Task Force (FATF)'s recommendation on protecting nonprofits from abuse in the context of ‘terrorist financing’ regulations: https://lnkd.in/g7ZcuqhF Lessons learned from nonprofits’ experiences with ‘bank de-risking’: https://lnkd.in/gEj22EF9 The Charity & Security Network's, Human Security Collective's and European Center for Not-for-Profit Law Stichting's respective work on how security and counter-terrorism measures affect nonprofits and civil society: https://lnkd.in/gBEti2zy https://lnkd.in/gEEwSF8u https://lnkd.in/gzbeRDSU cc Rusty Stahl National Council of Nonprofits ACLU Inside Philanthropy Nonprofit Quarterly The Chronicle of Philanthropy The NonProfit Times A4ID - Advocates for International Development International Lawyers Project (ILP) #nonprofits #civilsociety #banking #governance

Rusty Stahl has been sounding the alarm on this incredibly alarming action by Trumpholes in Congress (and even some Democrats), which would gut non-profits at the local, state and national levels. Opposition to THIS deadly bill and concept--for services as local as feeding the hungry, housing the homeless, assisting people with AIDS, aiding immigrants, or advocating for the disabled--is a clarion call for us to organize to save such FUNDAMENTAL services which make the difference between life and death for many of our neighbors. Trump and his troglodytes understand that the power of the Civic sector in preserving human services--something we have done for decades as Government support in many areas have been withdrawn. BUT THIS is ideological with the aim of picking "winners" and "losers" among non-profits based upon their mission, and level of activism. WE MUST FIGHT THIS TODAY, and every single day--especially when the new Trump Administration assumes power, and the GOP Congress takes control. It is urgent for us to organize every single non-profit at the local level, in Congressional Districts across the country with a widespread, well-funded "SAVE OUR SERVICES" campaign. We MUST make people in our communities know what is at stake.

The Building Movement Project (BMP) is asking #nonprofit leaders to fill out a new survey about the impact of the current political climate. Since the U.S. Supreme Court rejected the use of affirmative action in higher education, its ripple effects have spread across various sectors, especially on programs for racial equity and justice. Simultaneously, communities around the country are facing restrictions related to reproductive choices, LGBTQIA+ rights, immigration, and more. There is no data on what is happening to nonprofits because of these and other similar activities. This short survey will help us understand how nonprofits and community groups are experiencing and responding to these challenges. The results of the survey will provide valuable insights and recommendations for nonprofits and funders. Share your perspective and take BMP’s survey today! https://bit.ly/48MMI06

📰 "Working-Class Communities Feel 'Ignored and Disrespected' by Government" At a recent Dáil committee hearing, TASC Executive Director Dr Shana Cohen highlighted a concerning trend: growing distrust among working-class communities who feel overlooked by policymakers. This lack of direct engagement is allowing far-right misinformation to take hold by offering action where people feel ignored. Dr Cohen observed that policymakers often favour middle-class charity representatives over engaging directly with communities—a gap TASC is striving to close. The aim? To rebuild trust and show democracy works for everyone. ➡️ Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/eAbw4VSQ #SocialInclusion #IrishPolitics #TASC #Democracy
