As of January 15th, the FDA has banned Red Dye No. 3 in food, drinks, and ingested drugs due to its link to cancer in lab rats. This decision follows the Delaney Clause, which prohibits cancer-causing additives in food. Here’s what you need to know: •Manufacturers must reformulate products by 2027 or 2028, but items made before the ban may still contain the dye. •Alternatives like beet juice, carmine, and plant-based pigments are being explored. •Red Dye No. 3 was previously banned in cosmetics in 1990. Did you know that Red No. 3 was banned from cosmetics in 1990 due to cancer concerns? Despite this, it remained in foods and ingested drugs. However, the FDA has now decided to revoke its authorization based on studies highlighting potential health risks. Red No. 3, a synthetic dye made from petroleum, has been linked to cancer in laboratory rats. The Delaney Clause mandates the FDA to ban any additive found to cause cancer in humans or animals, leading to this decision. Manufacturers have until January 15, 2027, for food products and January 18, 2028, for ingested drugs to reformulate their products. This includes those importing to the U.S. Consumers may notice changes in the appearance of certain foods and medications as manufacturers transition to safer alternatives. This change aims to enhance safety and reduce potential health risks. At Advanced Powder Solutions, we are committed to helping manufacturers navigate this transition smoothly. Our expertise in process development ensures a healthier choice for consumers. Let's work together for a safer future!
