LFP previews sports league shift to D2C in rights showdown bluff Eyebrows were raised when the French soccer governing body—the LFP - Ligue de Football Professionnel indicated it could deliver live Ligue 1 matches direct-to-consumer if unable to find a satisfactory bid for the 2024-2029 domestic rights for the national championship. Although this might appear on the surface to be a French issue, a major national soccer league moving its domestic broadcasts to a direct-to-consumer offering would be a watershed moment for sports leagues throughout the world—even though this case does come with some caveats. #D2C #sportsstreaming

New: The BBC, ITV and Channel 4 are in a three-horse race to secure the television rights for next year’s Women’s Rugby World Cup in England. World Rugby has entered into promising discussions with all three broadcasters, with the governing body hoping to strike an agreement with one of them before the summer. Of the three channels, two already have a strong women’s rugby portfolio. The BBC has one year left on its four-year contract with the Women’s Six Nations, while ITV was the host broadcaster for the 2022 World Cup in New Zealand and showed England’s WXV games on its on-demand streaming service, ITVX, last year. Free-to-air coverage has been identified as a key priority for the event, with Sarah Massey, the tournament’s managing director, telling Telegraph Sport that it is crucial the tournament is “widely accessible”. Really interested by this, the third multi-territory rights sales agreement in quick succession signed by Infront with a top European football league. Do sluggish international rights sales mean renewed emphasis on agency rights bundling to try and stir interest? Just how badly is piracy diluting the rights value? Have top European leagues - EPL aside - lost a bit of their lustre? Could a solution be teaming up to sell international rights in certain markets with an aggregated package (as proposed by Javier Tebas) ?
