Application of underground substation (GIS) Gas insulated substation An underground substation is a type of electrical substation that is built underground, typically in highly populated cities like Mumbai, Ahmadabad, Bangalore etc. where areas space is limited. It is a facility that transforms high-voltage electricity from power stations to lower voltage levels that can be distributed to consumers. In an underground substation, all or most of the equipment is located below ground level. The substation is usually built in a large underground chamber, which is accessed by an entrance building at ground level. The entrance building usually contains control panels, switchgear, and other equipment required for the operation of the substation. SF-6 Sulfur hexa fluoride gas is being extensively used as a dielectric and extinguishing arc media in the area of high voltage electrical switchgear. SF-6 gas does not exist in the natural state and is a synthetic product, finds itself progressively adopted by all concerned users due to its improved performance characteristics and service quality which has reduced size and weight of the equipment. The reason for this choice lies in the fairly rare combination of dielectric and arc-extinction properties. The dielectric strength is several times greater than that of other known media, at the same pressure. The arc-extinction properties are also unique which even after much research carried out, could not discover a comparable media so far.
