❗There's no way I could stress enough how important technician's work is during a conference!❗ Last week I worked at a conference where my colleague-technician was absent and it was a nightmare! Yes, I can fix things here and there when needed (and it was pretty much needed) but that's not the point! The point is that a technician is a professional who knows how to act preemptively and make things run smoothly! It's what they do million times better than me. 10,000 hours. That’s the amount of time it takes to truly master a craft. Audio, mixing, vision, mixing, technical production management. The craft itself doesn’t matter. During a live event, you need someone who doesn’t hesitate. You need someone who knows signal flow without even thinking about it. You need someone who knows exactly which patch cable to check when a camera isn’t working. You’re paying technicians for the hours, not the days they work on your event. I had to complete an important task at native in my new house to proceed with the next work. Since it was a hectic schedule I couldn't follow up with the technicians regularly. The work was going back and forth. When I requested the technician's work through phone calls, he gave different reasons and didn't complete the job. Since my work was dependent on the technician's job, it was getting delayed. I couldn't proceed further. It felt like a stopping point. Later I asked the technician and his team to visit my house. They all came at the assigned time. I explained to them clearly on why they needed to complete the work and what would be the impact if it wasn't completed at the right time and when they needed to complete etc. They were fully available to listen to me. After hearing everything, they all went off and I thought this time also it's going to be delayed. However, 15 minutes later I could see the task being completed and I was all smiles because I was able to proceed with the next steps. It was a good shift. I realised that even though I communicated over the phone, they couldn't get the impact. However, when I spoke to them directly they were able to listen and act upon it immediately and that's the power of personal interaction and communication. When we communicate effectively and also inform them of the impact, the outcome is great and powerful.
