RESTORATION: A CONTEMPORARY OUTLOOK The latest issue of Arredo & Città edited by Fondazione Neri - Museo Italiano della Ghisa is out now. The restoration of a cast iron artefact requires a study of the historical sources that have reached us via designs and photos. The restoration work, for which Fondazione Neri provides the indispensable documentation to Neri company, aims to reclaim the original cast iron items both aesthetically and functionally. Restoring the original forms sometimes means reconstructing entire models or irremediably damaged parts, or reinserting elements that had been lost over the years. I love how you can see through these three images how a botanical painting can be the inspiration for a tile design. An interesting insight into the creative process.
Kate Cadman, our Collections Curator, was recently invited by the Oxford Ceramics Group (OCG) to give a talk on Victorian tiles for a Tile Study day at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. The invitation arose from a three-day visit to Ironbridge last Autumn by members of the OCG, who were impressed by Coalport China Museum and Jackfield Tile Museum in particular. The talk was an opportunity to showcase Jackfield Tile Museum, the last surviving complete Victorian tile factory in England, and its wide-ranging collections. A further and much appreciated insight came from using our archive collections of documents, drawings and designs to explore the process of making and designing tiles from contemporary sources. For example, the image below of a design by F.H. Fowler, 1973, shows how designing a tile might start with a drawing from nature that is gradually stylised 🎨 #JackfieldTileMuseum #VictorianTiles #CravenDunnill #MuseumArchives

VIMAR: A LOST HERITAGE Located in the middle of the Cojuango-Chichioco ancestral house and Casa Real are two mid-20th-century houses beside the cinema palace, which were demolished. Now, the site is being developed into a new shopping center. Among the Cine Malolos, Cine Estrella, and Eden cinema, the youngest cinema palace faced demolition, which is the Vimar Cinema. Cine Malolos was demolished due to lightweight materials, and Cine Estrella was replaced by a commercial building now rented by a famous fast-food chain. At that time, two remaining cinema palaces were seen, but unfortunately, now the remaining is the facadism that occurred at Eden cinema. Vimar Cinema, erected in the 1960s on Paseo del Congreso, showcased Brutalist architecture. Despite being under the 2001 declaration as a heritage zone and the enforcement of RA 10066, it met the fate of demolition in 2022. Why was a demolition permit granted? Why didn’t the national agency monitor our counted heritage town? It’s unfortunate that the easiest option was chosen without considering the potential of incorporating existing structures into new functions. Retaining structures like Vimar Cinema, similar to what happened with Eden cinema, could have preserved the cultural heritage while repurposing the space for a new function. It’s important to consider the historical and architectural significance of such structures when making development decisions. #VIMAR #LostHeritage #MgaPalasyongNagtatanghalNgPelikula #Pamana #NHM2024

Preserving Our Heritage: International Day for Monuments and Sites 🏛️ The International Day for Monuments and Sites has been established for more than 30 years by UNESCO in cooperation with ICOSMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites) with the idea of drawing the attention to monuments around the world and their value as well as their preservation as a cultural heritage of mankind. 🌍 At MC, we understand the significance of protecting these Monuments. That's why we offer innovative solutions tailored to the unique needs of historical preservation. Our Exzellent STP renders stand as a proof to our commitment to safeguarding architectural legacies. 💪 Unlike conventional restoration systems, our Excellent STP operates on a fundamentally different principle. It features a specialized mechanism designed to address high salt loads and moisture-induced damages. By absorbing moisture and dissolved salts from the masonry, our renders effectively transport them to the surface through a distinctive macroporous structure, all without compromising the internal integrity of the plaster. Any efflorescence that may occur can simply be brushed off, ensuring a lasting and aesthetically pleasing restoration. 🏗️ With MC's expertise, products and dedication, we're not just preserving buildings; we're safeguarding stories, memories, and the essence of civilizations past. Together, let's honour our collective history and ensure that these iconic landmarks stand as testaments to our enduring legacy for future generations to cherish and admire. 🌟 #mcbauchemie #mchbauchemieglobal #mcinternational #exzellentstp #salztransportputz #PreservingOurHeritage #HistoricalPreservation #CulturalHeritage #ArchitecturalLegacy #InternationalDayforMonumentsandSites #UNESCO #MCsolutions #SaltTransportRenders #HeritageRestoration #CulturalLegacy #besurebuildsure

The commune of Gratot, in the Manche département of Normandy, France, is home to the ruined medieval castle known as the château de Gratot. It has been listed by the French Government as a Monument historique. The English Channel is merely a few kilometers away. Constructed in the 14th century, the original Château de Gratot experienced numerous alterations until the 18th century. The Argouges family, barons of Gratot, built it; they sold the castle in 1771. The 18th-century pavilion is the most recent addition to the castle, which was constructed in a variety of architectural styles.
