In FY 2023-24, Nishat Mills Limited faced a significant decline in profitability despite revenue growth. Key financial highlights include a 13.05% revenue increase to Rs. 160.257 billion, driven mainly by local sales. However, gross profit dropped by 17.82% due to rising production costs, especially in energy and finance, alongside increased competition. Finance costs surged by 50.72%, primarily due to higher borrowing costs and working capital requirements. EBITDA remained relatively stable, thanks to higher dividend and other income. However, profit after tax fell sharply by 47.66% to Rs. 6.369 billion, reducing earnings per share from Rs. 34.60 to Rs. 18.11. Segment performance was mixed: spinning and weaving faced challenges due to high costs and competition, while dyeing and home textiles showed resilience. Investments in renewable energy, new projects, and operational efficiency are expected to improve future performance, with capital expenditure of Rs. 18.740 billion. What we learnt ; A - How a commodity can be premiumized - Starch is a commodity product - Used as a stabiliser in food products Manufacturers have started focusing on manufacturing modified versions of the same starch that have applications in pharma, oil drillings - gets sold at 2x of food grade starch with hardly any changes in the cost structure A cash rich business, growing north of 25% with a 25% PAT B - Lean cost structures ; Instead of importing the entire processing line from Europe like most starch manufacturers have done, the entire line was made in house at 1/3rd of the cost C - Humility ; The promoter not only spent the entire day with us going into the granularity of the business and his vision, but also had us visit his home and sent us off with some hand picked fruits from his orchard. The only reason to meet promoters apart from understanding the business, is to see what true success really looks like - humble, unassuming and focused.
