The safety culture of hospital providers and staff is fundamentally linked to #PatientSafety culture, according to an AHRQ study published in BMC Health Services Research. Researchers reviewed nearly 6,700 responses to AHRQ's Surveys on Patient Safety Culture (SOPS) Hospital Survey 2.0 and the SOPS Hospital Workplace Safety Supplemental Item Set. The largest number of associations between survey measures were overall support from hospital leaders; being able to report workplace safety problems without negative consequences; and overall rating on workplace safety. The study underscores the essential role of fostering robust safety cultures in healthcare to enhance safety and well-being for both staff and patients, researchers concluded. https://lnkd.in/eCKJW9Qf

Imagine a high-tech plant building contractor in the United States, striving to boost productivity and reduce injuries among its workforce. They partnered with experts to develop and deliver two construction-specific health education programs: #MentalHealth Promotion and #Musculoskeletal Injury Prevention. Through workshops, handouts, posters, and health talks, International SOS on-site Medical Personnel and global subject matter experts brought these programs to life. The results were remarkable, with a significant decrease in musculoskeletal injuries, improved health and safety standards, strengthened corporate reputation, and minimized medical case referrals. New APIC study alert! Not only does it highlight significant information around hand hygiene observation targets, but it’s also a reminder to think about how we might conduct other IP and quality-related activities/audits, especially in a resource-limited landscape. Do we miss the opportunity to capture quality observations and provide meaningful feedback and education when we are focused on using our (often limited) resources to hit an excessive collection goal? Is having an excessive observation goal pulling resources from other necessary, impactful work? Thanks to our amazing APIC colleagues for this important and fantastic work!!
Hand hygiene (HH) monitoring is vital for patient and staff safety, but how many observations are enough? A recent study by Sara M. Reese, PhD, MPH, CIC, FAPIC, and colleagues, explores this critical question and suggests a shift in approach. Key Insights: ✅ Hospitals could reduce HH observations to 50 per unit per month without compromising data quality, even at lower adherence rates. ✅ Fewer observations free up time for more impactful activities like training, education, and fostering a strong safety culture. ✅ Focus should move from extensive monitoring to actionable initiatives that drive adherence. Let’s rethink how we approach hand hygiene to make a bigger impact on patient safety. 📖 Read the press release: https://bit.ly/3DqPNsW #InfectionPrevention #HandHygiene #PatientSafety #HealthcareQuality #APIC
