A team led by Dr. Ritesh Sachan, an assistant professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering and an expert in aberration-corrected microscopy, secured a $2.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation to purchase the first aberration-corrected microscope in Oklahoma! A unique partnership between OSU and the University of Oklahoma has resulted in the expansion of microscopic research capabilities in Oklahoma. 💡💡💡 Three professors at The Ohio State University have been elected as members of the National Academy of Inventors 2024 class of fellows.  The newest NAI fellows from Ohio State are Joseph Heremans, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering and an Ohio Eminent Scholar in Nanotechnology, and two retired professors: 2023 Nobel Laureate Pierre Agostini, professor emeritus of physics, and Longya Xu, who recently retired as professor of electrical and computer engineering after more than 30 years on the faculty. Congratulations Hang Shu for successfully defending his doctoral dissertation, "Impulse-Induced Nonlinear Dynamics of Flexible Mechanical Metamaterials," under the advisory of Jordan Raney, Associate Professor in MEAM. Shu’s work explored mechanical metamaterials—artificially designed structures with unique properties determined by their internal structure. By investigating nonlinear dynamics, the research expanded understanding of how these materials can transform engineering design across deployable structures, reconfigurable robots, and advanced mechanical systems. Congratulations to Dr. Philippe Sucosky, Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Director of the PhD Program, who is principal investigator on a newly-awarded American Heart Association (AHA) award to study the role played by mechanical forces in the calcification of the bicuspid aortic valve - the most common heart valve defect. This work, in collaboration with the University of Arkansas, will include a novel fabrication of a valve-on-chip device mimicking heart valve structure, mechanics and function.

Baylor School of Engineering & Computer Science Professors, Drs. David Jack and Trevor Fleck, and PhD student, Savannah Rose, have developed an alternative sandwiched composite with an additively manufactured core for use in marine, aerospace, and automotive applications. The new design allows for a higher degree of geometrical freedom relative to standard core materials that are of a fixed thickness and can be developed on demand for customized performance for given applications. Congratulations to Dr. Sarah Malik on her successful PhD thesis defense! Sarah's thesis, Data-Driven Approach for Damage Detection Leveraging the Digital Thread, was advised by Ahmad Raeisi Najafi and Antonios Kontsos, and focused on the use of artificial intelligence for damage detection. 💡 Ton C. is with CIMNE's Aeronautical, Marine, Automotive, and Energy Engineering Research Cluster. In his Final Master’s Thesis, Mr. Creus has made significant strides in the field of metamaterial design in the hyperelastic regime. Under the guidance of Dr. Ester Comellas and Dr. Àlex Ferrer, Ton has studied and implemented hyperelasticity in a topology optimization toolbox, with the long-term goal of using this tool as part of the topology optimization process.
