Boxing is dead. Long live boxing. Anyone else blocking off time to watch this (partial) travesty tonight? I say "partial" travesty because, while the main card is a naked cash grab, the undercard is a rare instance of a women's fight with multimillion dollar purses on both sides. I predict a profitable outcome (i.e., somebody will win, and under circumstances that: a.) do not damage Jake Paul's business model and efforts to establish himself as a "real" boxer - however defined; and b.) create the business case for a PPV rematch). More specifically, I predict Jake Paul as the winner by split decision (Mike Tyson doesn't have to prove his boxing bona fides to anyone), with at least one participant hitting the canvas on a low blow.

On a more serious note, I’ve spent the entire day engrossed in discussions on LinkedIn regarding last night’s fight, Netflix issues, comparisons between boxing and actual combat (It’s worth noting the insightful post by Nicholas V. on this topic.), and the implications of these discussions on the sport’s reputation. Additionally, there’s been a lot of talk about the fight’s impact on the sport, with some arguing that it embarrassed boxing while others praised it and highlighted its potential for growth. On a more practical note, let’s consider the Taylor vs. Serrano fight. It garnered an impressive 50 million household viewers. How many people, like my wife, have never been a fan of boxing and yet watched last night’s fight and discovered a newfound appreciation for the sport? After the Taylor vs. Serrano fight, my wife expressed her intention to start watching boxing regularly, which I thought was a positive aspect. The word that resonates most with me from my time in the Marine Corps is innovation. We are always told to find new and innovative ways to improve and enhance. Seems to me that could have happened, who knows? Just my thought for the moment.
