The seeming enormity of the green energy shift taking place in China is given shape by what’s described as the most comprehensive English-language report on China’s energy transition. It also looks at the persistence of fossil fuels in its energy mix. https://lnkd.in/d2sNe_gY

Misguided government policy is stalling Canada’s clean #energy transition progress Canada’s power and politics question of the day: What is blocking your path to a robust clean energy future? public policy inertia; regulatory uncertainty; politically motivated government meddling in the marketplace; ill-informed wagering of public money on a single low-carbon winner in an energy market where no single power source will be that winner; or all the above. If you chose (E), go to the head of the class. You would be seeing energy transition challenges through the eyes of industry leaders faced with the complexities of moving the country to a viable clean energy future. And that future is not far away; it is today. A March 14 expert panel convened by the #Macdonald-Laurier Institute underscored that timeline. But this is Canada. Inertia is us. Here are some takeaways from that panel, which included Mike Gladstone, #Enbridge Inc.’s (TSX:ENB) external affairs Canada director, and Fred Ghatala, director of carbon and sustainability for #Advanced Biofuels Canada. •No single energy source has the power to carry the clean energy transition alone. As Ghatala pointed out, applying a carbon intensity approach to all fuels will allow every option to contribute now to the country’s clean energy transition goal. [See Navius Research chart of 2010-22 consumption of renewable fuels below.] •Decreasing greenhouse gas emissions today with fuels usable in current engine technologies will pay big dividends down the road, especially in transportation and other hard-to-abate sectors. •But doing things now is not Ottawa’s way. And neither is it ready, willing and able to let private enterprise do things now. As Gladstone noted, too many policymakers look at energy transition objectives “and ask themselves, What is the energy source that we will use to solve all our energy problems?’ And then, once we know that, well, then we’ll just make sure we invest in it and build it and all the rest will come from it.” But that is not going to happen. •We do not have that single energy source today, and we will not have it tomorrow. Nor will we have the required infrastructure. Or the required knowhow. Or the required certainty of regulatory policy. What we do have is government policy that discourages investment and the entrepreneurial initiative that is needed to find the solutions for all the above. •In government’s carrot-and-stick approach to tipping the scales to achieve its policy goals, the United States offers, what Gladstone said, is a “buffet of carrots” while Canada rolls out “a battalion of batons.” “Government policy today is not an enabler of investment in energy solutions,” he said. “It is taking years and years and years to try to figure out every detail instead of figuring out how to unleash private capital to invest and test and try out some of these ideas.” nonstop@shaw.ca @trenshaw24.bsky.social @timothyrenshaw https://lnkd.in/gcZFPbPH

China’s Green Pivot: A Lesson for the World 🌍 While China has historically been the world's largest emitter of greenhouse gases, there are promising signs of a shift. The country’s rapid development of renewable energy, particularly solar and wind power, has led many experts to believe that its emissions have peaked or will soon. This significant change is a testament to the power of government policy and investment. As other nations grapple with climate change, they can learn from China’s experience and accelerate their own green energy transitions. #ClimateChange #RenewableEnergy #China #GreenEnergy #Sustainability #ClimateAction #CleanEnergy #GlobalWarming https://lnkd.in/evYXJ6gb

If your argument is that the shift to green energy in America gives other countries a competitive advantage, your sources need to be fact checked. Countries like China have made more progress in the green energy transition than every other country COMBINED. Free yourself from the propaganda of big oil lobbyists and wake up!

Interesting article on data showing China starting to decarbonise and switching from fossil fuel burning power generation to renewables. "However, calling the peak of China’s emissions can only be a tentative conclusion, as some of the factors behind the shift could reverse. Problems in the Chinese property market have led to a slowdown in China’s construction sector, meaning less concrete poured with its associated high emissions, and the carbon-intensive iron and steel sectors have also faltered." https://lnkd.in/eggEBhfD

The United Kingdom invented #coal power in the 1880s. Today, in 2024, they phased it out for good. How'd they do it? Click into the article to find an analyst report, which credits Britain with five key moves: 📣 Announcing their exit from coal in 2015 and never flinching. 💷 Pricing carbon. 🍃 Investing in offshore wind. 🔌 Reforming energy markets to encourage #renewables. 🏗 Investing in the grid. Great things are possible! Tagging some UK and UK-adjacent #climate advocates for congratulations! River Paige, Dan Robinson, Eve Joseph, Rik Irons-Mclean, you did it! https://lnkd.in/guWcd_Q8
