“Stanford computer scientist Fei-Fei Li is unveiling a startup that aims to teach AI systems deep knowledge of physical reality. Investors are throwing money at it. … “[Li is] on a part-time leave from Stanford University to cofound a company called World Labs. While current generative AI is language-based, she sees a frontier where systems construct complete worlds with the physics, logic, and rich detail of our physical reality. … “[About ten years ago, Li created] ImageNet, a bespoke database of digital images that allowed neural nets to get significantly smarter. She feels that today's deep-learning models need a similar boost if AI is to create actual worlds, whether they're realistic simulations or totally imagined universes. Future George R.R. Martins might compose their dreamed-up worlds as prompts instead of prose, which you might then render and wander around in.... World Labs calls itself a spatial intelligence company, and its fate will help determine whether that term becomes a revolution or a punch line. -- Steven Levy Investors are pitching this as an entertainment play but the real value here seems to be in business, government and research, including city planning, training and industrial applications. https://lnkd.in/gEC25i3h

I attended a great talk (at NVIDIA Auditorium, Malachowsky Hall, at the University of Florida) about AI by Stuart Russell, a renowned professor of Computer Science at UC Berkeley and one of the leading experts on AI, with a rather interesting title: "How Not to Destroy the World with AI". This talk highlighted the critical need for building safe AI systems, a direction my own research is taking in K-12 education. I aim to develop AI-powered learning environments that not only enhance learning but also prioritize safety. To achieve this, we must clearly define and guarantee what safety means in these contexts. How do we define and ensure that? Contributing to this question is a key goal in my academic career. Here are some of the critical points that stood out for me: 1. General Purpose AI (AGI): AGI could outperform humans in most tasks, but we're not quite there yet. While GPT-like models show progress, we're still far from achieving full AGI. 2. Deep Learning and AGI: Russell expressed doubts about whether deep learning alone will lead to AGI, pointing out limitations like feedforward neural networks’ linearity. 3. AI Safety: A key challenge lies in ensuring that highly intelligent systems act in the best interest of humans. Russell suggests designing AI that is "explicitly uncertain" about human goals, fostering cooperation rather than control. 4. AI and Society: If we succeed with AGI, it could lead to a dramatic rise in living standards. However, there are concerns about the societal impacts—potential job losses, changes in social participation, and increased polarization due to AI-manipulated content. 5. Regulation is Crucial: The race to dominate AI development could have catastrophic consequences. Russell emphasizes the need for well-defined, enforceable regulations to prevent AI from crossing dangerous red lines, such as developing bioweapons or acting autonomously without human oversight. "We should make AI systems that are safe by design from the beginning."--Stuart Russell #AI #ArtificialIntelligence #StuartRussell #AGI #AIEthics #AIRegulation #DeepLearning #AIInnovation #Technology #FutureOfAI #LinkedInLearning #AIInSociety
