🗓️ WEDNESDAY in Stockholm: "What matters for peace? Enhancing accountability through measurement" at the Stockholm Forum on Peace and Development (SIPRI) Peace matters for the sustainability of almost every important aspect of society, but there is little evidence of what good investments in peace look like. The perspectives considered when measuring peace are often too short-term, too scattered, and too disconnected from people’s lived realities and how they want to build their societies. 🌐 Join CDA, Search For Common Ground, Conciliation Resources, and the Deputy County Governor of Murang'a County, Kenya to learn about the practical uses of the Peace Impact Framework, created to identify the essential elements of peace and how to measure it. On the International Day of Peace 2024, the Institution of Peace and Development in partenership with PLANET AND ARTS and Agir pour Sauver l'Afrique (ASAFR) , took part in a profound discussion on the theme "The Challenges of Living Together in the Great Lakes Region", gathering youth, parents, academics, and students. The conversation explored the social, economic, and environmental causes of conflict, focusing on issues like relational and cultural barriers, competition for resources, and the unequal management of natural assets. Panelists emphasized the need for regional collaboration to manage shared resources such as forests and lakes, and to address the economic disparities that fuel conflict. The discussion also raised concerns about external actors potentially benefiting from regional instability, leading participants to call for unified, strategic efforts by local communities to counter external interference and reclaim peace and stability. This dialogue serves as a powerful reminder that peacebuilding requires collective action and regional cooperation. Let's hope that this is a starting point for change. "How can we build peace in an increasingly hostile world?" As conflicts escalate and wars erupt globally, the question of peace becomes more urgent. Peace, a fragile state, is under constant threat. The real challenge is: how do we preserve what’s left, and how do we create more? On October 10th, the Institute of International Affairs at the University of Iceland (IIA) will host a peace conference featuring a distinguished panel of experts. This conference will explore the roles that individuals at various levels play in the peacebuilding process. We encourage anyone who can to join this important conversation to do so. Register here: https://lnkd.in/dKb_iKYK If peace is a collective effort, then we each have a part to play. The future is in our hands and the world is ours to shape. #PeaceBuilding #ConflictResolution #SustainablePeace

International Peace Day 2024: Cultivating a Culture of Peace International Peace Day, observed annually on September 21, serves as a global reminder of the importance of peace and the need for collective efforts to foster harmony in our communities and the world. In 2024, the theme "Cultivating a Culture of Peace" emphasizes the vital role that individuals and societies play in nurturing an environment where peace can thrive. Cultivating a culture of peace involves promoting values such as tolerance, understanding, and respect for diversity. It encourages dialogue over conflict and cooperation over division, urging us to address the root causes of violence and injustice. This year, we are called to reflect on our personal contributions to peace—whether through acts of kindness, community engagement, or advocacy for social justice. As we observe this day, let us commit to fostering peace in our daily lives. By educating ourselves and others about the importance of compassion and empathy, we can create a ripple effect that transcends borders. Together, we can build a world where peace is not just a distant ideal but a lived reality for everyone. Join the global community in celebrating International Peace Day 2024 by participating in local events, promoting peaceful dialogue, and taking action towards creating a more peaceful world. Together, we can cultivate a culture of peace that resonates for generations to come. #REVACAM# #CULTIVATINGACULTUREOFPEACE#

Today is the United Nations International Day of Peace. Today, the world pauses to unite for something that transcends borders, politics, and differences: the possibility of peace. For me, lasting peace is not just about the absence of conflict; it’s about how we show up in the world, how we engage with others, and how we respectfully hold each other accountable. With my work around the world, I’ve seen many times how even the simple act of authentically and safely engaging from the heart can melt away the barriers that divide us. When we disarm ourselves, we disarm others, and suddenly, something shifts—what was once tense or hostile becomes a space of connection and possibility. As we mark this powerful milestone, I invite you to join me in a global commitment to "un-divide the world, together." Whether you’re joining the Peace Wave at noon in your time zone (https://lnkd.in/eRUwScnR) or participating in other events across the globe, remember that peace isn’t just an external act—it’s an internal practice. It’s how we choose to approach the world and each other, even in the most difficult moments. Check out this website to find out how you can get involved today: https://lnkd.in/eAV5C5cA What can you do today to disarm your heart and find a creative way to honor this impactful event? How can you show up in a new way with compassion and courage? Every small act creates a ripple of peace out into the world. Let’s occupy our hearts and unite for peace today, tomorrow, and every day. Let’s un-divide the world, one heart at a time. . . . . #worldpeace #internationaldayofpeace #unitednations #peace #peacewithin #peaceandlove #innerpeace #peaceday United Nations Unity for Peace United Nations Foundation
