💚 Coal Roots, Green Shoots: How Mestna občina Velenje / Municipality of Velenje is balancing an industrial past with a clean future As one of the #MissionCities and part of the #PilotCities Programme working with #Ljubljana and #Kranj as a multi city Pilot Activity, Velenje is pioneering changes in governance structures and management at multiple levels, and holds the title of European Green Leaf in 2024, a nod to its increased focus on sustainability. 🏙️ The decarbonisation of Velenje's district heating system is one of the ways the city is working towards its climate goals. Not only is Velenje investing in the renovation of buildings and energy retrofitting, but they are also engaging their citizens along the journey through their Pilot Activity Up-SCALE, which enables citizens to track their energy consumption levels, encouraging behaviour change. The city has also opened a one-stop-shop for their citizens to provide a hub for knowledge, initiatives, and more, putting them at the centre of the transition. Explore everything that Velenje is doing on their road to climate neutrality and how! https://lnkd.in/etHdD4qg Tell us about what your city is doing in the comments, we'd love to hear! #EUMissions #HorizonEU EU Science, Research and Innovation

🌍 Greentalent helps sharing news about the energy world worldwide in its 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗻. 📰 Today, our column #Inspiretorenew focuses on international arrangements on transport and #storageofcarbon across borders in northern #Europe. 🍃 #Denmark, #Belgium, the #Netherlands and #Sweden established an arrangement on cross-border transport of CO2 with #Norway. This removes some of the obstacles on the way to a well-functioning #carboncapture and storage-market in the wide North Sea region. 🌬️"In order to reach climate neutrality by 2050 in Europe, we need carbon capture and storage in a larger, international scale. Today’s arrangements are two great steps in the right direction." says Danish Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities Lars Aagaard. 👉 Learn more with us: https://lnkd.in/eWb-kyPJ #Inspiretorenew #Greentalent #begreen #carboncapture #storageofcarbon #NorthSea #EU

Building and maintaining soil and other land carbon, as well as restoring ecosystems (including soil ecosystems), are worthy aims and should be pursued. However, their potential to ‘offset’ on-going emissions is often overhyped. No amount of such offsets will do anything more than slightly delay inevitable global heating if we do not rapidly decarbonise our energy, transport, industry and agriculture. Fossil fuel companies and governments not wanting to curb fossil fuel extraction have been enthusiastic financial backers of some of the major carbon offset companies overhyping what can be achieved in our dry and drying nation. Most cynically, some fossil fuel polluters and national accounting are using such offsets to cover only the domestic fugitive emissions for exported gas and coal - which when burnt contribute much more to AGW than the offet emissions. Malcolm Turnbull was right when he described the scheme as “a fig leaf for those committed to doing nothing”.

Nature-Based Solutions for a Sustainable Oil and Gas Sector As the world grapples with climate change, the oil and gas industry faces increasing pressure to reduce its environmental impact. Nature-based solutions (NBS), offers a promising path toward sustainability. NBS work by either increasing carbon storage (such as reforestation) or avoiding greenhouse gas emissions (like limiting deforestation). By planting more trees or preserving natural ecosystems, we can save around 10-12 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent annually – enough to reduce peak warming by about 0.3°C⁴. Oil and gas companies can play a crucial role by investing in NBS, offsetting their emissions, and contributing to a greener future. Let's embrace these solutions and work together for a more sustainable energy sector! 🌿🌎 Tayo Ajimoko #naturebasedsolution #nbs #nature #sustainability #oilandgas #climatechange #naturalecosystems #reforestation #sustainabilityupdates #rhetort

Two Canadian companies, CarbonRun and Planetary Technologies, along with Dalhousie University, are making waves in marine carbon removal technology, as featured in a recent piece by The New York Times. The spotlight shines even brighter on CarbonRun, now one of the biggest players in the sector after securing a $25 million deal with Frontier to help scale their innovative limestone technology for carbon removal. This collaboration reflects Canada's growing leadership in climate solutions and the potential of ocean-based carbon removal to make a real impact in the fight against climate change. 🌊🌿 Read the full article to learn more: nyti.ms/4e5Bmb7 #CarbonRemovalCanada #CarbonRemoval

It would be better if we didn't mix up the natural cabon cycles and the fossil one. For sure, we need to ensure that we manage natural eco-systems better, and that might entail that they also sequesters carbon as a side-effect. But the idea that they are there to offset fossil emissions as a carbon land-fill is flawed. https://lnkd.in/gEtYskTq
