A mismatch between materials needed to satisfy recycled content mandates—governmental and consumer—and supply, can only be bridged by significant investment in large-scale mechanical recycling facilities to drive down the cost of #recycling. IRG was founded to develop the country’s first hyper-scale (100,000+ tons p.a.) sorting, washing and pelletizing plant in Erie, PA. We will go into details about the plant, throughputs, operations and anticipated finished products. At the Advanced Recycling Conference in Cologne on November 20th, our partners Oscar Vernáez from Neste and Laura Strobl from Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging IVV presented insights from the INCREACE project. The presentation highlighted innovative methods to increase the recycling rate of plastics from Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) in the EU — aiming to boost the current 18% recycling rate to an impressive 63%! Key topics included: ✅ The cascade recycling approach utilizing mechanical, solvent-based, and chemical recycling technologies. ✅ Results from advanced dissolution and pyrolysis processes for recovering high-quality polymers. ✅ A focus on circular design and regulatory landscape to drive systemic change. They also had to chance to discuss advanced recycling technologies and innovative solutions with the other attendees. As the year is coming to an end, it is the perfect time to shortly reflect the highlights and achievements for #UPM #BioMotion #RFF in 2024. First and most important: our valued and trusted partners are successfully integrating #RFF into your products! For example, the Green Step Ligna concept tire by Nokian Tyres plc which was introduced and exhibited introduced at our booth at the German rubber industry conference, #DKT2024 in Nuremberg. It was even recently awarded with the Future Tire & Rubber award 2024. Or Stellantis who presented at the Annual World Biopolymers and Bioplastics Forum the CO2 reduction effect of our #RFF when applied to an underhood seal. And all the other great success stories by Artigo S.p.a, Reifenwerk Heidenau GmbH, HÜBNER, Industrial Rubber Products, L.L.C., SEALABLE Solutions GmbH, SFC Solutions, Standard Profil Group, Sumitomo Riko, Voith Group, and many more. Another #milestone was the decision to buy 100% green electricity for the biorefinery production processes in Leuna via Guarantees of Origin (GOs) from day one. By this means, the fossil impact during the production of our biochemical products will be further reduced, resulting in a new #negative carbon footprint of -1.1 tCO2eq/t for #RFF from cradle-to-gate considering biogenic carbon from our feedstock. The disruptive potential of #RFF for rubber and plastic applications was confirmed one more time by DIN CERTCO, who certified all grades the perfect additives for industrial, home, soil, and marine #biodegradability with unlimited use quantity according to DIN EN 13432 and DIN EN ISO 22403. This is brilliant news as the demand for biodegradable and compostable products is growing due to concerns related to the environmental impact of waste. That all the work was worth it, has been recently confirmed by the latest Top 10 list of today’s most significant sustainable projects in elastomer and rubber industry (#E4S), awarded by the European Rubber Journal (#ERJ). #RFF are ranked for the third time number one. Take #lacticacid, a vital raw material for biodegradable plastics, such as those found in everyday items like bags, cutlery, and packaging. We have partnered with OMZ for over 10 years, supporting them in developing technologies that convert corn starch into bioplastics using ion exchange technology. In 2020, OMZ expanded its innovative #ionexchange systems to help reduce water usage and halve sewage discharge. Our Diaphragm Valves DIASTAR provide excellent flow characteristics. OMZ was able to use the smaller DN50 valves to downsize equipment, reduce raw material needs, and optimize production. The result? Over 5,000 GF valves deployed, elevating OMZ's customers’ systems to a more sustainable, efficient level while ensuring leak-free performance. This is just one example of how GF is contributing to a smarter, more sustainable future.
