When architects visit a place or a building, we strive to grasp its "parti"—the essence, the soul, the spark of the conceptual idea, the inner fire of the design. Recently, I shared some images of the Bat Trang Pottery Museum, designed by Vietnamese architect Hoang Thuc Hao. Here is my interpretation of the building's parti, and this is the link to the architect's project page: https://lnkd.in/gsE88Yef

Part II | The Possibilities of Historical Reinterpretation Part II, encompassing various explorations of issues related to the renovation and restoration, reinterpretation and reconstruction of historic architecture, and through such diverse design research and theoretical depictions, provides examples concerning urban and spatial potentials as well as humanistic and historical reinterpretation possibilities within the realm of contemporary architectural design, aiming to enrich its methodology and vocabulary, ultimately leading to more profound and diversified practices. In this part, the focuses range from central historic urban blocks to contemporary historical urban districts in Guangzhou, and even broader indigenous areas in China, covering examples from the renovation of specific conserved architectural entities, the evolution of historical urban neighborhoods, to the reinterpretation of abstract principles from Chinese traditional architecture, and the further introduction of propositions for the revitalization of representative post-industrial areas in the United States. Great legacies endure through remembrance: On this day in 1969, architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe passed away in Chicago, Illinois. Over five decades later, we continue to admire his work and promote the knowledge of his legacy. ✨ In this sense, in addition to preserving and disseminating knowledge about the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion, the Fundació Mies van der Rohe, through a variety of cultural and academic activities, promotes the study of the work of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Lilly Reich and the Modern Movement, as well as debate and awareness of issues related to contemporary architecture and urbanism. Among their key initiatives is the organisation, jointly with the European Commission, of the EUmies Awards, one of the most prestigious of all European architecture prizes. His work still captivating us today, serving as a constant and enduring source of learning for generations. 🎥 Fragments from the trailer of the documentary film ‘The Mies van der Rohes’ by Sabine Gisiger presented during the first #PantallaPavelló2024. The spiritual dimension of architecture opens a world where design transcends physical form, creating spaces that resonate deeply with our being. History shows us the incredible architectural feats inspired by spiritual beliefs, from ancient temples to modern sanctuaries. These structures are more than just buildings; they are manifestations of our collective human spirit. The Walton Program at the CUA School of Architecture emphasizes the importance of integrating spirituality into architectural education and practice. This approach not only enriches the architectural landscape but also imbues our built environment with profound meaning and connection. Italian architect, historian, and restorer Gustavo Giovannoni was a key figure in the fields of architecture, #urbanism, and #conservation during the first half of the 20th century. His writings represent a significant step toward the full appreciation of the historic city, and his insights are directly relevant today to the protection of historic resources in urban contexts worldwide. Recently published, “New Building in Old Cities”, edited by Edited by Steven Semes, Francesco Siravo, and Jeff Cody is an abundantly illustrated critical anthology featuring many of Giovannoni's seminal texts related to the appreciation, understanding, and planning of historic cities. The readings are grouped thematically around key concepts in Giovannoni’s conservation theory—urban building, respect for the setting or context, a thinning out of the urban fabric, conservation and restoration treatments, the grafting of the new upon the old, and reconstruction.
