In recent years, natural disasters have grown in frequency and intensity, with hurricanes causing significant damage to coastal areas. Hurricane Helene, one of the most powerful storms to hit North Carolina in recent memory, was no exception. Beyond the physical devastation, one of the most critical aspects during such events is communication—lifelines for those in need of emergency services. With advancements in technology, SpaceX’s Starlink and T-Mobile have stepped in to improve emergency communications, particularly through their innovative DirectToCell technology. This article explores how these technologies are transforming emergency responses in North Carolina and potentially reshaping the future of disaster communications. With wildfire and hurricane season quickly approaching, now is the time to consider how #GIS and maps can aid in preparing and responding to a disaster event, and helping to mitigate downtime in telecom networks. Esri recently participated in the TM Forum catalyst project, 'Autonomous networks hyperloops - Phase V', which was focused on building a virtual command center that would support telecom service providers during disaster events. Learn more about the project and how Esri can help your organization through the link and demo video below. https://lnkd.in/gGugAX4B #EsriTelecom

"T-Mobile US and STARLINK turned on their direct-to-device (D2D) service over areas in the US state of California where wildfires have burned more than 10,000 homes and structures. The operator is making the early test service temporarily available to deliver wireless emergency alerts and SMS while also enabling emergency texting. T-Mobile noted SpaceX’s D2D constellation is not yet fully deployed. It was temporarily used in October 2024 to provide emergency SMS texting for hurricane victims in the southeast US." #ClimateChange #Innovation #Satellite #EmergencyServices https://lnkd.in/eKcdkYz6

What happens when disaster strikes and communications go dark? Russel Van Der Werff from Aerostar (Aerostar International LLC) breaks down how HAPS technology is revolutionizing emergency response. ️ ⛈ When Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico, HAPS platforms restored cell service across the entire island in just 3 days - even providing service in some places where it didn't previously exist. 🚒 USDA Forest Service is using HAPS to extend connectivity directly to firefighters and provide real-time infrared mapping capabilities ⏱ From ground to stratosphere in just 3.5 hours - that's how quickly HAPS platforms can deploy to disaster zones, providing near-immediate communication infrastructure when ground systems are damaged. See more about how HAPS technology is revolutionizing disaster response and recovery 👇

Where people or communities are at high risk of harm, #government has a clear and firm responsibility to #protect its #citizens. An #effective #emergency #response to a natural #hazard requires #rapid, coordinated #action! The primary purpose of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (#FEMA) is to coordinate the response to a disaster that has occurred ! In the face of #disaster, politics must give way to #solidarity and #cooperation. By working together, you can help more! 👍 Failure of communications during a #disaster is a common problem. A well-functioning communications system and internet services are very important elements of community resilience. Satellite internet, such as #SpaceX's #Starlink, should therefore be used, especially as SpaceX's #Starlink satellite internet is a groundbreaking response to crisis and disaster management. Whether it's dealing with natual hazards such as floods, hurricane, earthquakes, or wildfires, Starlink's reliable, high-speed, low-latency internet has proven invaluable to emergency responders around the world. 👍 https://lnkd.in/gEQTj8uQ

Hurricane Helene is a reminder of one of the classical solutions provided by satellite communications. Whether it be fixed VSAT antennas, satphones or LEO terminals, satellite provides basic voice and data communications following a disaster. In the recent case of hurricane Helene, some people still cannot be contacted as cell towers are down. And yes, fixed VSAT antennas CAN be designed for high wind survivability.

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has authorized SpaceX’s STARLINK in partnership with T-Mobile to deliver direct-to-cell service in regions of North Carolina severely impacted by Hurricane Helene. This emergency measure aims to restore communication services as the recovery process begins. Following the hurricane, which struck on September 28, over 74% of cell towers in affected areas were out of service. As restoration efforts progressed, this figure has since dropped to 17%.
