New in Bronx Times: "New Destiny Housing, the state’s largest provider of supportive housing for those experiencing domestic violence, partnered earlier this year with EatWell, a Boston-based company that makes tailored meal kits for people with chronic illness and for those experiencing food insecurity." Through our partnership with EatWell, program participants receive a weekly supply of healthy, balanced ingredients along with recipes that take less than 30 minutes to prepare. The meal kits, which are delivered to the families weekly, include ingredients that are plant-forward and nutrient-dense, like vegetables, legumes, and whole grains. The kits also include recipe cards crafted by EatWell’s Culinary and Education Director, Adriana Katekawa, a 2-star Michelin chef who creates each recipe with resource-limited kitchens and time-strapped families in mind. We recently had the opportunity to speak with Jared and Miki and ask them some questions. Here's how the conversation went. What made you want to work with Hope House’s Better Food Co Project? At Crafty Ramen, our purpose is to craft meaningful connections, so that together we can create a difference in the communities we serve. We wanted to work with Hope House’s Better Food Co Project, because of their important work and connection in a community that gives us our purpose. Hope House brings so much support to the community we love and we want to help in any way that we can. What does a community food system look like to you? We believe everyone should have access to quality, healthy meals. For us, a community food system is a way to connect communities through good food, and for those fortunate with more than enough to share with those that may not have enough. We created this project to share healthy food with low-income families. Why is that important? For us food is about more than sustenance—it is a way to show people we care about them and that they are valued. To provide quality food to those in communities that may not have access to it is our way of showing them that they are valued and perhaps even provide a little hope. We’ve all needed a helping hand at some point in our lives, and with this project we can pay that back and extend a hand to those that need it today. What excites you most about sharing this meal with our community? To us, ramen is the ultimate comfort food, so sharing our ramen with this community is our way of giving them a big hug and saying we care.

Food is a right ❤️ Those of us who work or volunteer in food pantries need to be mindful of privilege and work to destigmatize relying on such resources that are necessary because of systemic barriers to food. "There is an enormous power differential between team members and clients at food pantries. Staff and volunteers determine what type and how much food clients can get. We grant or deny access to foods that reaffirm their culture, traditions, and health. We choose when and how rules are enforced, and we determine what behaviors can strip someone of the privilege of receiving food altogether." https://lnkd.in/e_6mAebg

This Thanksgiving, let’s rethink the role of gratitude in food access. As Thanksgiving approaches, we hear a lot about gratitude. But when it comes to food insecurity, the narrative around gratitude can cause harm. Anina Estrem, MPP's article makes an important point: food is a right, not a privilege. Expecting gratitude from people experiencing food insecurity distracts from the real issue—systemic barriers to access. It also deepens power imbalances, framing food as something to be earned rather than a necessity everyone deserves. At SBNC, we see this reflected in our work every day. Whether it’s connecting students to SNAP or supporting them in accessing campus resources, our goal is to remove barriers, not add new ones. This Thanksgiving, let’s move beyond requiring gratitude and focus on creating equitable solutions for all. I encourage you to read this article and reflect on how we can make this shift together. https://lnkd.in/gramFHSv #FoodInsecurity #Hunger #StudentSuccess #HigherEducation

Meals on Wheels Facts Meals on Wheels is a service that provides meals and social contact to adults who are unable to leave their home to get food, or prepare their own meals. There is no single definition of Meals on Wheels. Indeed, not all providers in the UK call their service ‘Meals on Wheels’. Often, the service is called ‘Community Meals’, ‘Meals (at Home) Service’, ‘Mobile Meals’, or ‘Meal Delivery Service’. Most services in the UK deliver a daily hot meal, whilst others might deliver less often. Some deliver chilled and/or frozen meals, either in addition to the hot meal or as a substitute e.g. hot meals on weekdays plus chilled or frozen meals to reheat over the weekend.

Food security is an important topic in the minds of many today. What are some ways that you can positively affect yours? Consider these tips. • Shop local - When you buy your food as locally as you can, there are fewer chances for your food supply chain to be kinked. • Build relationships with your neighbors - A healthy community is a thriving community. You scratch their back, and they scratch yours. • Eat simply - Eat meals that are as simple as you can tolerate. You can't get full on fancy. • Start a food pantry - Build and maintain a working food pantry when food is abundant. that way you know that you have food when it isn't as plentiful. • Grow it yourself - Growing your own food gives you complete control of your food security. It's also great for you mentally, spiritually, and physically. Does this seem attractive yet difficult? Contact us, and we can help you take back control.
