Reflecting on a great first day at Dynamic Global Events (DGE) Next Gen MSL Summit. Two things jumped out at me… One I will share here. The other at another time. First. Great panel from Suzzanne Tairu, PharmD from AbbVie, Chad Fellers of Alnylam Pharmaceuticals and led by Ralph Rewers with Gilead Sciences on the importance of emotional intelligence. Powerful stories on how empathy and being in tune with signals can lead to game changing engagement. An MSL sensed things were not right with the HCP in a long anticipated, long prepared for meeting. So instead of powering through their content and requisite presentation, the MSL asked if the doc was ok and suggested that perhaps she would rather reschedule. Turned out the HCP was not OK in that moment in time. That kindness changed the relationship going forward. That individual and brand was instantly elevated in the eyes of the HCP as a trusted partner who cared about more than a script. I bet many reading this have similar stories. Sometimes it’s what is not logged in CRM or tracked on call logs that make the power of being human immeasurable. Thanks for a thoughtful provoking session and day. More from Philly later… #pharmasales #pharmamarketing #hcpengagement

WE Matter – that was the message at Pfizer’s joint Western and Eastern European clusters meeting last week. And – thanks to our excellent organizing committee, inspiring speakers and dedicated teams – I’m sure everybody left the meeting feeling visible, valued and inspired to take on 2024. Why do I say that? Well between us, we cover 34 countries across Europe – so many healthcare professionals and countless patients rely on our teams to deliver healthcare solutions in what can sometimes be a challenging environment. But, as the saying goes, “a problem shared is a problem halved” and by coming together – to identify the common challenges (and opportunities!) – we can work as one team to find solutions. Thank you once again to my friend Massimo Visentin for the great partnership. As a leader, there is nothing more strengthening than seeing people’s delighted faces, hearing the fizz of conversation and laughter and feeling the ripple of energy as colleagues come together in person. For Western and Eastern Europe, Pfizer’s #175th year now feels like it has truly begun. The work we do matters to society. The people who shape and deliver that work really matter. #Pfizercolleague #Pfizerproud

Great article Daye Bexley! We appreciate your authentic leadership and how you prioritize building trust and collaboration. Establishing trust with our customers allows us the opportunity to partner and uncover solutions that ultimately benefit patient access!
I’m pleased to announce that my new article: ‘The role of market access leaders in driving access to innovative therapies’ is featured in Modern Healthcare this month. At Sanofi, every decision we make is driven by our purpose to improve the lives of people diagnosed with disease. The Specialty Care Market Access (SCMA) team plays an important role in achieving this aim, serving as the crucial interface between brand teams and our delivery partners. To design the frameworks and facilitate the connections that drive access to therapies, I prioritize three areas as part of my leadership approach: 1. Building trust and collaboration 2. Improving our engagement with customers 3. Investing in innovative pathways Read my article here to learn more about how SCMA continues to innovate to ensure improved access across the US: The role of market access leaders in driving access to innovative therapies | Modern Healthcare. #innovation #marketaccess #collaboration #SCMA

You are not alone! Last week I hosted an agency-only meeting of the PM Society’s Industry-Agency Relationships Interest Group with co-lead Stephen Page. 12 agencies were represented, some larger networks, most smaller and independent. The question – what’s life like running healthcare comms agencies at the moment? The answer – some significant and worrying trends, but also a few green shoots that could be pointers for the future. People on the ground, industry procurement, marketing and agency teams are not only feeling the strain, but showing it in their behaviours; Ghosting because they’re afraid of breaking relationships, having to renege on purchase orders, and pitches that evaporate despite the financial commitment made on both sides. Worse is the direct impact on the quality of the dialogue with healthcare professionals and therefore derailing our purpose and mission: producing positive outcomes for both patients and investors. The industry has always relied on its very capable marketing and medical affairs teams and their relationships with skilled agency communicators for disease awareness, medical education and awareness of new therapies. It is significant that Veeva has cited that 77% of all the content currently being produced for HCPs is not being read. Something is not right. The irony is that over the last year, we’ve seen huge progress in vaccine development, cancer treatments, obesity management, and rare diseases, as well as new treatments for conditions like Alzheimer’s. It is the value problem that persists. Consequently, every cost on the P&L is being examined and it is all too easy to focus on marketing and medical affairs, forgetting that this is the interface with the HCPs – the bit that needs to thrive – if there are to be better outcomes for investors and most importantly, patients. In our meeting, just one member of the group talked about some progressive conversations with several pharma procurement colleagues; Overall however, the messages were disheartening. And for us, the worst aspect was the degree of desperation that has crept into conversations between industry procurement, marketing, medical affairs and their agency partners, all hardworking and expert people focused on the same mission: better outcomes for patients. So, those green shoots? The synergy that has existed between so many capable industry and agency people has taken a few knocks and many of the individuals involved are feeling close to breaking. So, you are not alone. But while all good things come to an end, it is always followed by the next adventure and challenge. The mission remains the same: producing positive outcomes for both patients and investors. So, we’d ask anyone experiencing the drama of the accelerating change facing the sector, to get involved and help us at the PM Society define how we all remain relevant and get back to adding the value that is so very dearly needed by patient populations around the world.
