Fascinating insight, close on the heels of the Boeing iS-33e, satellite break-up, from Dr Sarah Webb from Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne, Australia 🇦🇺 ⚠️ 130 million pieces of space debris, equates to 30 male blue whales worth of debris in orbit. Dr Webb refers to the Kessler Syndrome (runaway cascade event in orbit) -  a theoretical scenario where Earth's orbit becomes so cluttered with debris that it's no longer possible to use satellites in certain areas. The scenario is named after NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration scientist Donald J. Kessler, who first proposed it in 1978. The Kessler Syndrome is characterized by a chain reaction of collisions between space debris, which creates more debris and makes the situation worse:  🌎 Debris accumulation: Space trash like spent rockets and satellites builds up in orbit.  🌍 Collisions: Collisions between debris objects create more debris.  🌏 Domino effect: The collisions create a domino effect, leading to more collisions and more debris.
