Composting is a biological process that takes at least 14 days for the friendly bacteria and ingredients 🐛 to work their magic 🪄 We often see machines which pertain to be a composter but are in fact food dryers ♨️ which simply dry the food 🥬🌶️ by removing the excess moisture creating a dry, biomass material which is not compost and remains classified as waste. SEGREGATING SPENT COFFEE GROUNDS=SCGs..Part 3 Hopefully you've been following our argument ... We need to decrease our commercial food waste and any that is generated should not go to sewer, incineration, or landfill but instead head to anaerobic digestion and the production of renewable energy and biofertiliser or else composted. The new waste legislation in Wales will certainly drive these changes 👌🌏♻️ BUT...here's the final bit of the jigsaw. We need to go one step further and segregate coffee grounds from general food waste. A step too far? Why should we? ☕️Because SCGs are not set to decrease any time soon and it's not generated for the same reasons as other food waste; ☕️it's produced in huge amounts; ☕️it can be used in various proportions to optimise anaerobic digestion thus potentially creating more energy; ☕️it can be used in various ways in agriculture...composting; vermiculture; soil improvement; and biochar; So, even if we treated it to the same end processes as general food waste ..we will maximise outputs by utilising a clean stream of waste coffee BUT, here's the exciting bit. Food-2050 Aerobic Composter celebrated 1 year of successful operation at a 100% availability at Drakenstein Municipality in Paarl. This pilot project was initiated by Drakenstein Municipality taking steps towards diverting food waste from landfill to comply with legislation of 0% organic waste to landfill 2027. This aerobic composting technology demonstrated the lowest operational cost to declassify hazardous food waste, with a 100% environmentally friendly process, continuously and at point of source, into a safe, stable and saleable product of approximately, Carbon = 50% Nitrogen = 2.3% Phosphorus = 0.6% Potassium = 1.2% This product is ideal to condition soils thereby contributing immensely towards food security. Jumper Waste Management has also joint this pilot project in July this year exposing and educating their clients to this technology by diverting some of their food waste to this composting machine and giving them back product samples illustrating a truly circular economy. Our vision at EarthSOS = healthy soil - healthy food - healthy lives. EarthSOS (Earth Starch Organic Solutions) became interested in processing organic waste in New Zealand when urban sprawl appeared next door to traditional composting sites. Discharge to land, sea and air has become a challenge for existing sites. The alternatives such as waste to energy and protein production for animal feed has a place, but, what does either of these solutions do for our soil? A huge portion of New Zealand's economy comes from the soil, and we need to replenish our soil with healthy productive compost. With the help of some clever people we designed out the environmental challenges faced with traditional commercial composting. In doing so we also downsized the area required for processing and we improved the processing time to 4 hours! Yep it is true, and there are no ill effects to the environment. Add to that, our equipment is modular and scalable. Start small and increase to volumes you have space to accommodate, 80,000tonnes? No problem. But why? We all know large centralised system generate large volumes of heavy road use. How about smaller systems? Closer to the source, limiting the use of heavy vehicles. We have now designed our container series, capable of processing up to 3,000 tonnes per year, housed in containers. With smaller facilities available nearer our communities, it would be possible to support smaller traditional composting operations and not take the feedstock away as centralised systems are apt to do. As EU economies move from traditional “take, make and dispose” models towards more a more circular economy, anaerobic digestate (digestate) helps farmers contribute to this shift.   Transforming organic by-products into digestate through the anaerobic digestion process minimizes waste, maximizes resource use and returns valuable nutrients to the soil.   By reducing the amount of waste farmers produce, using digestate cuts waste disposal costs and minimizes the environmental impact of organic waste.   Consider the farmer who converts animal slurry into digestate. They have less manure to manage on their land, making it easier to comply with laws limiting the amount of manure that can be applied to their land.
