A three-year research project by UK operator, National Gas Transmission, has shown gas transmission networks can be repurposed for 100% hydrogen. This is critical to the development of the hydrogen industry as it demonstrates that the energy source can be connected to existing infrastructure, which is attractive to both the government and private sectors. Additionally, existing electrical grids can integrate hydrogen in a cost-effective way, a key advantage over wind and solar, which require the construction of costly and environmentally damaging transmission lines. 🎉 National Grid wins £1.7m for net zero projects! Exciting news for the UK's journey towards net zero! National Grid has secured £1.7 million from Ofgem's Strategic Innovation Fund to drive forward four pioneering projects. NGED has been allocated £920,000 for two significant initiatives. The "Rural Energy and Community Heat" (REACH) project will tackle the challenge of delivering ample electrical capacity for low carbon technologies in remote areas. This is fantastic news for rural communities transitioning to electric heating and vehicles! 🏡🚗 The "Road to Power" project aims to convert construction equipment to electric power, cutting down emissions in the construction sector. This is a big step towards decarbonising an industry notorious for its carbon footprint. NGET didn't fall short either, with £870,000 to explore two key projects. One project will investigate the feasibility of offshore energy islands, potentially becoming hubs for renewable energy like wind power. 🌬️ The other will examine superconducting technology for more efficient electricity transmission, which could vastly improve the stability and efficiency of our energy system. I caught news of this major report this morning - sharing in case you haven't seen/heard it. Its from the new National Energy Systems Operator and says that a decarbonised grid by 2030 is possible, but only if ‘pace is prioritised over perfection’ - interesting phraseology. It needs in depth analysis as I'm sure there will be trade offs as we face into the climate emergency and ensure we balance progress for nature recovery and that communities and society thrive. And considerable investment needed quickly - direct and indirect aligning other targets. Andrew Wade of The Engineer summarised Renewables and transmission must be rolled out at record rates to achieve CP30, says NESO. Commissioned by energy secretary Ed Miliband, the Clean Power in 2030 (CP30) Report is NESO’s first significant policy contribution since it's inception of National Grid Plc in October 2024, when it became a fully public entity. NESO said achieving CP30 is ‘challenging but achievable’ and that clean sources can produce at least as much power as the island of Great Britain consumes by 2030. The UK’s Minister for Energy Security and Net Zero, Justin Tomlinson, delivered a keynote address this morning at the opening of the North Sea Decarbonisation Conference, focusing on the current state and future of the energy industry in the UK. He also engaged in discussions with industry executives, addressing various opportunities and challenges facing the sector. During the event, participants engaged in a series of discussions. One key session titled "Unlocking the North Sea as a Green Powerplant" delved into the innovative energy solutions that are positioning the North Sea as a crucial area for green energy development. Another topic, "Hydrogen: Hype or Hope?" explored the potential and realities of hydrogen energy within the UK and broader European context. Additionally, there were focused dialogues on the advancements in offshore wind and marine energy, highlighting the ongoing and future projects in these areas. In one presentation by Sharanya, Sharanya Kumaramurthy, EIC Market Intelligence Manager & Interim Head of Consult, outlined the evolution and trajectory of offshore wind energy within the North Sea. She detailed the European Union's 2023 initiatives, like the EU Wind Power Package and Grid Action Plan, designed to enhance energy output and modernize infrastructure.
