Russia launched a massive aerial attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure on Thursday, leaving over a million households in darkness. Ukrainian officials reported nearly 200 missiles and drones targeting the nation, marking the 11th major assault on Ukraine’s power grid this year. “Attacks on energy facilities are happening all over Ukraine,” said Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko, who confirmed nationwide emergency outages.

Attempted attack of TurkStream pipeline very dangerous for European consumers — Kremlin Kiev attacked the Russkaya compressor station in the Krasnodar Region, which provides for gas supply along the TurkStream gas pipeline, by nine fixed-wing type drones, the Russian Defense Ministry said earlier MOSCOW, January 13/ The attempt of the Kiev regime to attack the Russkaya compressor station in the Krasnodar Region is a very dangerous link in the chain of similar actions, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters. "This is a new, a very dangerous link for European consumers in the chain of actions on explosions, organization of explosions and sabotage on the Nord Stream [gas pipeline]. This is the halt of gas transit, the halt of compressor plants in Sudzha and so on," Peskov said. Kiev attacked the Russkaya compressor station in the Krasnodar Region, which provides for gas supply along the TurkStream gas pipeline, by nine fixed-wing type drones, the Russian Defense Ministry said earlier. The compressor station continues normal supplies of gas to the gas pipeline. #business #finance #financialservices

#Russia is massively escalating its airstrikes on #Ukraine. The ramp up since August is huge and suggests a few things. (1) Russia's drone production has reached scale and this is the ugly "new normal" where Ukraine can expect 200-ish drones on the bad nights, (2) Putin is escalating strategically, not just to improve his position if Trump tries to end the war--the escalation started months before election results were known, and (3) Ukraine really, really needs to adopt a hardened and distributed generation model for its #electricity system--hundreds of turbines spread around the country. Centralized plants will not survive in this environment. Since the start of russia’s invasion, DTEK Grids has restored electricity to 15 million Ukrainian families. The Donetsk region has suffered the most damage, being close to the russian border and partially occupied since 2014. Despite constant missile and drone attacks, our teams keep working. A drone hit one of our substations just a few days ago, causing a fire. We quickly de-energized the substation, allowing firefighters to put out the flames. Power was restored within a few hours. These situations happen often. Recently, while working at another substation, we had to evacuate due to a drone alert. Minutes later, the drone struck the substation. Unpredictable challenges like this are now part of our daily work. Yet, we keep going. Together, we are restoring power and hope for millions. #EnergyResilience #RestoringPower #StandWithUkraine #StrongerTogether

Authoritarian governments have little option but to destroy internet infrastructure in a continual retreat from the complexities of the free flow of information; even if that information is of dubious quality. This is a systemic reality which is a feature, not a bug, of totalitarian organizations. It doesn't come from any ideological basis. It comes from organization theory and library science; a discipline devoted to organizing and retrieving vast quantities of information of unpredictable veracity. Marx, who spent most of his time avoiding manual labor, his wife and his mistress at the British Museum, was considered an outre and harmless crank by the staff due to his lack of interest in library science. Like many library users, he was principally interested in reinforcing his affirmation biases at the expense of any information which went against it; a defining feature of totalitarian governments. The staff kept good notes on him and are thrilled to share if you've any interest. This hard reality requires totalitarians to devote enormous resources to manufacture their alternate internets in order to get the utility they want out of it and not the utility they don't want out of it. Thus, they devote more resources to retarding its development than encouraging it and why they are organizationally unfit to be leaders in the field over the long haul. I know software whizzes who exploit these relatively closed ecosystems to perform bulk processing of data in order to win orders and avoid costly processing time on a network like Amazon's.

Today, Sweden announced that it is canceling plans for off-shore wind projects in the Baltic Sea, citing defence concerns. Romania, with a suitable area of 2,900 km2 for off-shore wind projects, intends to add 7 GW of capacity by 2035 (under the high-growth scenario). Various fragments from downed Russian drones landed in Romania’s territory in recent weeks and months, some near the sites of on-shore wind farms close to the Black Sea. In addition to the physical risks in terms of infrastructure protection, cyber security for such facilities must also be considered, while potential interferences with radar and defence systems raising additional issues. In the current geopolitical context, with Russia potentially continuing to expand its presence and influence in the Black Sea, as well as intensifying its “grey zone warfare” in the region, can Romania and NATO create a safe-zone for energy projects off the coast? #renewables #offshorewind #blacksea
