Turkey’s Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan, emphasized that these developments highlight the urgent need for Syrian President Bashar Assad to reconcile with his people and engage with the opposition. At a press conference in Ankara, Fidan stated, “Recent developments show once again that Damascus must reconcile with its people and the legitimate opposition.” He added that Turkey stands ready to contribute to the peace process.

Today the #Houthis are in control of the whole of northern #Yemen, and southern Yemen too is not far from their reach. There seems to be less possibility of a political solution in Yemen without their participation or without a major share in the political structure given their ascendency in the national political sphere over the decade. Meanwhile, one cannot exclude the possibility of the emergence of other scenarios if Israel’s current military strikes against the Houthis lead to the larger involvement of the latter in regional conflict. One also cannot rule out the possibility of Yemen turning into another Afghanistan or Libya where more territory falls into their hands, particularly after the Iranian retreat from supporting its proxies and the reducing stakes of Hezbollah in Lebanon and regional politics. https://lnkd.in/dAjyv-B5 Turkey and the Syrian Conundrum after Assad: A Test for Ankara’s Capacity and Credibility Authors: Riccardo Gasco Samuele Abrami 16/12/2024 Until recently, Syria appeared to be locked in a stalemate, with few anticipating the rapid and dramatic turn of events unfolding. That is why many were caught off guard when, on 27 November, armed opposition groups launched a swift and coordinated offensive on Aleppo and other parts of the country. Less than two weeks later, during the night of 7-8 December, the rebel forces made their way into the Syrian capital, Damascus, putting an end to the Assad regime that had retained power for over 50 years. With the government forces offering no resistance, the Syrian President fled the country after being granted political asylum in Russia. Thus, led by the Turkey-backed Syrian National Army (SNA) and Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) – an Islamist group formerly linked to al-Qaeda – the rebels quickly took control of the country’s main institutions. Such a fast-paced evolution in a scenario where many state and non-state actors have been involved since 2011 raises questions about Syria’s political future and its implications for the Middle East regional equilibrium. On 7 December, the members of the Astana Process – Iran, Russia and Turkey – met in Doha to discuss the next steps. While Moscow and Teheran lost their historical ally in the region and appeared powerless to shape the events, Ankara is now seen as the regional winner. Certainly, its more active role could position it as the primary beneficiary of the Assad regime’s downfall. However, the path ahead will be neither easy nor free of challenges. What is Turkey’s actual role in Syria? What does it aim to achieve? And what are the implications for its domestic and foreign policies?

Does anyone see red flags here as a mix of Syrian rebels overthrow the govt? "Are they trading one repressive regime for another?" one Linked In commentator asked. Wall Street Journal lists "Syrian rebels, Kurds, and ISIS occupying different territories of Syria as well as Turkey who controls areas of its northern border. These forces went against the Syrian govt (allied with Iran, Hezbollah, and Russia). Israel is on its southern border (Golan Heights) now faced with taking over a buffer zone as a “Separation of Forces”agreement between Israel and Syria is now dissolved as the Syrian Army abandoning its post. Syria has been destroyed by its civil war. Aleppo left in incomparable ruins. Without any respectable govt to replace al-Assad’s regime- does this look like another potential crisis to add to the list of overthrows in the Middle East?Consider how these overthrows played leaving openings for the bad guys: the Shah of Iran (to Mullahs), Saddam Hussein (to ISIS), Muammar Gaddafi (to al-Qaida), Asraf Ghani (to the Taliban), the Houthis in Yemen and an epidemic of coups in Africa in the last three years by military takeovers. https://lnkd.in/gFBCtWne When you chase the dictators out - who is there to replace the entire system of govt.? You think the people stricken with poverty, hunger, joblessness, and homelessness are going to fill in? In Syria - no one knows - but it is a ripe opportunity not only for change, but more crises for the people without stable leadership. Whoever carries the "big stick" in the ME- right? Yet these seeds were planted long ago. Interesting WSJ does not list the U.S. as allies with Syrian rebels. "When the Libyan government was overthrown in Fall 2011, the Clinton/Sullivan State Department and CIA plotted to seize the Libyan weapons arsenal. Weapons were transferred to the Syrian opposition. US Ambassador Stevens and other Americans were killed in an internecine conflict over control of the weapons cache. "Undeterred, Clinton and Sullivan stepped up their attempts to overthrow the Syrian government. They formed a club of western nations and allies called the “Friends of Syria.” The “Friends” divided tasks who would do what in the campaign to topple the sovereign state. Former policy planner at the Clinton/Sullivan State Department, Ann Marie Slaughter, called for “foreign military intervention.” Sullivan knew they were arming violent sectarian fanatics to overthrow the Syrian government. In an email to Hillary released by WikiLeaks, Sullivan noted “AQ (Al-Qaida) is on our side in Syria.” (Peace and Planet News) https://lnkd.in/g8sv_4VA It has never proven successful to align with terrorists like al Qaeda or fanatic sectarian rebel groups. When you do - you become a contributor to sectarian violence that will arise with no one to stop them. #Syria #civilwar #Assad #violence

After the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria, global and regional powers are scrambling to secure their interests in the resulting power vacuum. Turkey has emerged as a key player, supporting the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and launching attacks against Kurdish forces. The Kurds, aligned with the U.S. in the fight against ISIS, are now under assault by Turkey and its allies. Meanwhile, Russia and Iran, Assad’s former backers, face significant losses. Israel, which played a role in weakening Assad’s allies, is cautious about the rise of Islamist factions. The U.S. has expressed support for an "inclusive" government in Syria, urging opposition groups to commit to democratic values. Europe, particularly France and Germany, seeks a stable Syria to prevent further refugee crises. Interesting times indeed
