Congratulations to the newly appointed Chair of CARICOM! As the Caribbean region embarks on a new chapter, we at Mega Interior and Construction Limited extend our congratulations to the newly appointed Chair of CARICOM Ms. Mia Amor Mottley (prime minister of Barbados). We believe this is a crucial time for the Community to determine and provide clear policy direction, particularly following the outcomes of COP29. While COP29 may have fallen short of expectations, it underscores the urgent need for innovative solutions and decisive action on climate change. We believe that leveraging mechanisms such as carbon credits, debt swaps, and strategic partnerships can unlock significant opportunities for sustainable development within the region and Barbados already leading in so many areas with blended finance and climate action. We wish the newly appointed Chair and the entire CARICOM community success in the months to come as we strive to build a more resilient, sustainable, and prosperous future for the Caribbean. #CARICOM #Leadership #ClimateAction #SustainableDevelopment #Caribbean

Outdated Royal Privileges in the Modern Era While the British monarchy has adapted to modern times, certain medieval rights and privileges remain for King Charles III and Prince William. Here are some of the little-known privileges: 1. Sovereign Immunity - The monarch cannot be sued or prosecuted, rooted in medieval law. 2. Royal Prerogatives - Powers like appointing the Prime Minister and issuing passports technically remain with the Crown. 3. Crown Land Wealth - The Crown Estate, worth over £15 billion, provides the monarch with millions via the Sovereign Grant. 4. Exemption from Freedom of Information - The Royal Household isn’t bound by transparency laws. 5. Duchy Revenues - The Duchy of Cornwall, which supports the Prince of Wales, brought in £23 million last year. 6. Voluntary Taxes - The monarchy voluntarily pays taxes, but this isn’t legally required. Is it time to re-evaluate these privileges in the name of modern transparency and equality? #Monarchy #RoyalPrivileges #Modernization #BritishHistory #Democracy #Transparency

Peter Wallace calls himself difficult and “relentlessly orthodox and contrarian at the same time.” After 40 years at the very top of three levels of governments, this is how he is probably best remembered by the ministers, prime ministers and premiers he served. On the heels of receiving IPAC’s prestigious Vanier Medal, we look at his core beliefs and insights into the craft of the public service along with their practical implications for public servants. #publicservice Today in The Functionary. https://lnkd.in/edzMTxuy

What if we take the edit wars on Wikipedia surrounding the death of Elizabeth II as an entryway to understand how freedom emerged as a buzzword on digital media (and far-right politics)? This is what I do in my latest article - published open-access in the Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute - on freedom, authority and authorship online 👇 https://lnkd.in/eYDumwxp

Excellent analytical and thought-provoking commentary written by my colleagues, Theodore Christou and Louis Volante, offering critical historical and contemporary perspectives on Trudeau’s leadership failures and missteps and prompting the path forward and lessons for the future. I appreciated the authors’ comment about the need for historical perspective and reflection for leaders on “how to confront their own challenges with honesty, depth and resolve.” With as much disdain as I have for Trudeau as a leader for destroying our beautiful country from within with his partisan policies (see the authors’ critical take on economic, immigration, governance and ethical blunders) and making it a laughing stock at the international scene, I think the brunt of responsibility for his leadership failures and broken promises also lies on the shoulders of his followers and Liberal party supporters, who for many years kept voting for such an incompetent, self-serving, corrupt, unethical, toxic, narcissistic, weak, and divisive party leader, who even in his resignation continued to look after his own and his party’s interests by proroguing the parliament and in the process, crippling the governance structures and putting the whole country in limbo in the face of growing outside threats and instability. It is not only the leader, but also its followers that need to heed the lessons from the past and learn from their own mistakes. What Canada needs right now is a strong and courageous leader, who will put Canada’s and its people’s welfare and interests first, who will improve its international image, who will not be grabbing at straws to stay in power with support of another unprincipled and ever-wavering “crutch” of a political party leader, and who, in the authors’ own words, would serve its citizens by “balancing immediate action with foresight, building trust and resilience, within institutions that serve all citizens". In line with the article’s historical take, I think a paraphrase of an age-old adage (often attributed not to a Roman, but a Greek historian, Herodotus) would be a fitting conclusion here: “Strong leaders create good times. Good times create weak leaders. Weak leaders create hard times [we are here right now]. Hard times create strong leaders [this is the future we need].”
Were you just thinking of the Roman Empire?! Check out this article from The Conversation, co-authored by the Faculty of Ed's Professor Christou. In the wake of Trudeau's resignation announcement, Dr. Christou and Dr. Volante, provide a unique comparison between ancient and modern societal pressures and how "an understanding of our past can help shape our future." https://bit.ly/4j4Irvu Photos: Marble head believed to be from statue of Roman emperor Augustus (AP Photo/Alessandra Tarantino) Prime Minister Justin Trudeau looks on at the start of a cabinet (THE CANADIAN PRESS/Justin Tang)

DONALD TRUMP'S INAUGURATION AS US PRESIDENT: The inauguration event of #DonaldTrump as the 47th president of the #UnitedStates [ #USA] took place on Monday, 20th January 2025 in #Washington. Due to #FreezingTemperatures and high #windsblowing, the scheduled inauguration function was held inside the #UnitedStates #CapitolRotunda in #WashingtonDC. It is the 60th U.S. presidential inauguration and the second inauguration of #DonaldTrump as #USPresident, marking the commencement of his second and final non-consecutive term as #USPresident, and the first term of #JDVance as the #USVice President. #PoliticalaAnalysts believe that it is also the first presidential inauguration indoors since the then US President # Reagan's public inauguration in 1985. It is noted that #DonaldTrump's first inauguration was held eight years earlier, in January 2017. The event included a #SwearinginCeremony , a #signingceremony, an #inauguralluncheon, a #firsthonorsceremony, and then a #procession and parade at the Capital One Arena. Inaugural balls are held at various venues before and after the inaugural ceremonies.
