Toyota Motor Corporation has launched the all-new Urban Cruiser, a compact SUV reimagined as a battery electric vehicle (BEV). This new addition to Toyota's electric vehicle lineup strengthens its position in the competitive European BEV market. The Urban Cruiser is set to be launched in the UK this summer, with an expected starting price over £30,000. The vehicle features Toyota’s “hammerhead” design with slim headlights, robust rear quarters, and a wrap-around rear light bar, blending SUV toughness with modern urban style. It is slightly larger than the Yaris Cross and has a compact 5.2-meter turning radius, making it ideal for city driving. Inside, the Urban Cruiser offers a spacious cabin, courtesy of a 2,700mm wheelbase and sliding rear seats that provide ample legroom, similar to D-segment vehicles. The interior includes classic SUV elements like a horizontal dashboard and elevated seating for better visibility. Ambient lighting with 12 customizable colors adds to the premium feel. The SUV is built on Toyota’s lightweight BEV-specific platform, maximizing battery space while preserving interior space. It offers two lithium-iron-phosphate battery options: a 49-kWh battery providing 142bhp with front-wheel drive and a 61-kWh battery delivering 172bhp with front-wheel drive or 182bhp with all-wheel drive. 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan Overview A compact crossover with surprisingly large interior space, the Tiguan brings sharp style and unexpected versatility to a crowded, competitive class. The Tiguan's elegant exterior lines echo the larger Volkswagen Atlas, and even pricer Audi and BMW crossovers, while the interior design — not especially imaginative — is nonetheless treated to premium materials and an intuitive layout. Smooth ride quality matches the Tiguan's upscale vibe, which extends to the strong, low-end power from its turbo engine. Some clunky gear changes mar the driving experience, and most rivals are slightly more fuel-efficient, but the Tiguan's overall sophistication makes it a top small SUV pick. Pros: Smooth, quiet ride Comprehensive driver assistance tech comes standard Roomy interior and cargo area Among the few small SUVs to offer a third-row seat Con: Third-row seat is super tight Touch-sensing controls can be distracting to use while driving Engine can be either too slow or too quick to respond What's New: Previously optional driver assistance features now standard Base model gains new features Updated infotainment system Part of the second Tiguan generation introduced for 2018 Competitors To Consider: Small SUVs with an available third row are few, and ever fewer at the Tiguan's price. The Kia Sorento is our top pick. It's slightly longer, the extra row a bit roomier, and it's loaded with features. The base engine is sluggish, but there's an optional turbo. The recently redesigned Mitsubishi Outlander is stylish and comfortable and offers a plug-in hybrid. Pricier picks include the Land Rover Discovery and Mercedes-Benz GLB. If a third row isn't important, the Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson and Mazda CX-50 are all class-leading considerations. Nearly three years since South Korean automaker #Hyundai debuted the first teaser images of its electric SUV concept, Seven, the now rebranded Ioniq 9 has been spotted in the wild, giving the best look yet at the SUV’s size and interior. Debuted at the 2021 LA Auto Show, Hyundai’s Seven SUV concept built on the company’s 45 concept unveiled in 2019 and the Prophecy concept of 2020, presenting the next iteration of Hyundai’s “dedicated battery electric vehicle (#BEV) showcase.” Though a long time between drinks, a raft of spy shots of the Ioniq 9 in various degrees of camouflage have begun peppering car blogs. The latest images come by way of South Korean car YouTube channel Shorts Car, which managed to get a hold of some photos of an Ioniq 9 parked on a street in its home country. Hyundai responded by releasing more images, though not the full detail of what to expect. Based on the same E-GMP platform as the company’s current midsize electric SUV, the Ioniq 5, the Ioniq 9 is reportedly much bigger, and is expected to be around the same size as the #Kia EV9, with a length of 5015mm, a height of 1780mm, and a width of 1980mm. Hyundai says the Ioniq 9’s ‘Aerosthetic’ design is a “unique blend of aerodynamic performance and aesthetic appeal”, and says it draws inspiration, apparently, from the sleek exteriors and spacious, cozy interiors of boats. “Its single-curved roofline, coupled with an elongated wheelbase, ensures ample space for all passengers, including those in the third row,” it says. It promises to reveal more in coming months, although images of the Ioniq 9 – albeit in camouflage – have been released on the NewCarScoops platform. The Ioniq 9 has been scheduled to reach #Australia in the second quarter of 2025.
