This year’s Singapore International Water Week (SIWW) reminds us once more of the necessity of water. Singapore is one of the most water-stressed countries in the world, and it must balance a growing demand for water alongside a lack of natural resources. Maintaining a clean and accessible water supply is thus a key concern for Singapore. However, the water problem has been exacerbated by rapid climate change. Many impacts of climate change are water-related, such as rising sea levels, melting icecaps, floods, and droughts, resulting in environmental degradation and numerous social consequences. It is thus imperative for Singapore, as well as the rest of the world, to make water sustainable for future generations. This year’s SIWW focuses on four themes: Climate Mitigation and Water Sustainability, Climate Adaptation, Digitalisation, Water Quality and One Health. Running from 18 to 22 June 2024, it will feature a host of esteemed industry experts and city leaders, gathering to share and create water, coastal, and flood solutions. The provision of clean water and safe sanitation is a wicked problem. Why wicked? It’s a problem that is resistant to resolution – there is no single solution and there are changing requirements. For challenges like this, linear solutions need help – and this is where qualitative methods like foresight literacy, design lead facilitation and systems thinking become useful. At the SAICE Durban Branch AGM, we discussed how to unpack this challenge - we used the Four Futures Archetype model by Jim Dator. It is used to create scenarios to be designed or planned for from scratch. It is simple, but challenges participants worldviews in order for us to adapt against risks, and anticipate for opportunities. International workshop on Emerging policy challenges on New SOil Contaminants (ENSOr) Reflecting day 1 / 5th edition ENSOr workshop, on challenges for diffuse contaminations with emerging contaminants: Discussing policy challenges often feels like not 1 but several elephants are in the room. Considering the "zero pollution ambition" and "circular economy" one needs to account for the precautionary and the standstill principle - without any question! However, moving over to public health and food safety - we bump into the ALARA-principle (as-low-as-reasonably-principle). And on the top of it, we may see the "One Health" vision. At first sight it seems, that we might be driven by "competing objectives" and miss coherency in concepts, such creating confusion for practice. Or might it be, that we stand before the door, just missing to develop and come down with new system understanding for making our concepts complementary?! Access to clean water in focus as IVL expands internationally 🌊 Access to clean water and sustainable sanitation solutions are in focus as IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute strengthens its international operations. About 20 experts currently working with water, sanitation, and hygiene at the SIWI - Stockholm International Water Institute Institute are transferring to IVL through an acquisition. - Access to clean water and solutions to enable good hygiene are becoming increasingly challenging in more regions of the world, often due to climate impacts or geopolitical unrest. We need to scale up international efforts to meet this need. LIS-Water participated in a panel titled “Building Bridges in Water Services – Urban and Agriculture” as part of the event “Iberian Meeting for the Sustainable Use of Water,” organized by APRH - Associação Portuguesa dos Recursos Hídricos. This event brought together institutions and experts from #Portugal and #Spain, two countries that share international rivers. Jaime Baptista spoke on the topic "Assessment of the Performance of Policies and Regulation," presenting the recently launched #WaterGov Platform, developed by LIS-Water and the Inter-American Development Bank, in partnership with ADERASA asociación de reguladores, to assess, compare, and improve public policies and regulation. #WaterGov approach focuses on the institutional framework of the sector and regulation, covering regulator governance, the regulatory model, and the mechanisms and instruments. Based on the results, regulators can: 🔍 compare their performance with others 📝 develop an action plan for improvement ⏳ monitor their progress over time 🧠 access a knowledge hub with regulatory support tools.

The main take away from the Scottish Land & Estates Conference yesterday was that ‘less strategy and more doing’ was required for rural Scotland. Governments need to provide leadership for regulatory direction, with solutions coming from industry. Anas Sarwar MSP confirmed this stating the role of government was 3-fold; 1. Collaboration and partnership working 2. Develop strategic long term planning 3. Provide the ‘convening’ power The theme of the conference, Resilience: Building successful businesses for the future attracted thought provoking speakers and the case study and panel sessions were inspiring. There is a raft of policy currently swirling all of which need the ‘so what’ answering. The integration between food production and the environment was cemented - Vicki Swales said “without nature land based businesses are threatened” and regenerative agriculture was mentioned a number of times - ties in well with Savills Rural Reseach Food and the Environment spotlight due out early June. Tim Bradshaw highlighted 3 key takeaways to build personal resilience: 1. Focus on intelligence not information. Take a tactical pause! 2. Enable resilience in others - it only takes a human touch to make a huge difference 3.
