Booking.com vs Expedia: A Tale of Two Travel Booking Experiences 🛫 For the past five days, I went through a frustrating ordeal trying to book airline tickets on Booking.com. From constantly changing flight availabilities to payment rejections and price fluctuations, the experience was a nightmare. 😩 Despite multiple attempts and calls to customer service, the issues only compounded. Booking.com's dynamic pricing system seemed to be the root cause, with prices skyrocketing by £500 at one point due to my concurrent reservation requests. 🤯 Ultimately, I found success on Expedia Group's Expedia site, securing the desired itinerary AND at a lower price. The stark contrast in user experience between the two platforms was astounding, especially given Booking.com's reputation. 🤯 This experience underscores the vital importance of a seamless UX, even for large organizations. As a travel enthusiast and backpacker, I’ve always sought to simplify and personalize travel planning. This semester, I've had the incredible opportunity to ideate a project that aims to do just that, in our Product and Process Design course. Our Mission: We noticed a gap in how travel is planned. There's plenty of tools for booking flights and hotels, but what about truly experiencing a destination? Our app aims to fill this void by customizing travel plans into an easy-to-navigate interface. Role and Impact: I led the storyboarding and prototyping phases, where we brought our ideas to life. This was crucial in shaping our app's design, ensuring it was both functional and intuitive. This process has not only sharpened my skills in design thinking but also deepened my understanding of user-centric product development. From leveraging platform strategies to exploring blue ocean opportunities, we’re not just learning—we’re applying. Looking Forward: The future is all about building and enhancing the app’s features and user interface. More than a class project, I am passionate about evolving this into a fully realized product, as the problem we are solving is close to my heart.
