Thanksgiving is a wonderful tradition and an opportunity to reflect on what we are grateful for. A few weeks ago, I learned a way of saying thank you from Frank Gaschler and Ester Gerdts that made a difference. It is a way of saying it by using the 4 steps of nonviolent communication: 1. Observation, 2. Feeling, 3. Need, 4. Request and then tweak it a little. Here are the 4 steps for a powerful recognition and Thank you: 1. Observation: Describe the situation like a camera would describe it. 2. Feelings: What were my feelings in this situation? 3. Importance/Needs: What does that mean to me? Why is that important to me? 4. THANK YOU! This is much more powerful than a plain “Thank you” as the receiver understands and feels what his/her action meant to me. Instead of just saying THANK YOU to a teammate try it this way. Perhaps the example inspires you: 1. Last Friday I saw that you stayed till 8 pm to help Amy solve a customer problem she faced. You did not leave till you had found the solution together... 2. ...I was so relieved and happy. My heart was getting warm... 3. ... it means a lot to me to see that the people who work for me truly live our core values. When we work as a team, we are committed to each other and to our mission helping the customer. We do everything to become better together. And this was exactly what you did. I saw your commitment to finding a solution and, to being there for each other by supporting Amy in this situation. Always knowing that she would do the same. 4. Thank you! I love to hear how you applied it or how you say a powerful THANK YOU.

Ever received a thank you note that truly made your day? Today, a client's heartfelt message did just that for me. It highlighted my dedication and professionalism, and it struck a chord. Sharing this with a colleague, he proposed a brilliant idea: start a collection of thank you notes. I printed the note, and added a few others I'd received recently, and realized each message tells a story—a reminder of why I chose this path. These words highlight the trust placed in us and the immense responsibility we carry. It's easy to get lost in paperwork and deadlines, but these messages bring everything back into focus. They affirm the real impact we have on people's lives, beyond the courtroom. So here’s to the power of a simple 'thank you'. It’s more than just words on paper—it's a celebration of commitment, resilience, and passion. Let's cherish these moments and remember why we do what we do. Here's to making a difference, one thank you at a time.

5 Business Tips I’ve Learned from Thanksgiving 👇 👇 👇 just kidding 🦃 To the founders: Thank you for trusting us. Seeing what you build is inspiring—‘inspiring’ doesn’t even seem to quite capture it. Founder stories are the best stories, and there’s no greater honor than being a small part of your journey. To the FE team: Thank you for your hard work, vision, and dedication to greatness. We wouldn’t be where we are today without each person who’s touched this business. Forever grateful. To family & friends: Thank you for the laughs, wisdom, support, and constant good times. You’ve been a grounding force through every challenge and triumph, reminding me of what truly matters. Thanksgiving is a very American thing, but the idea is something everyone (even a Brit) can get behind. A lot to be thankful for today.

Thanksgiving isn’t just a time for food and celebration; it’s a chance to collect the stories that define our families, friends, and shared histories. We’ve all got storytellers in our lives—parents, grandparents, uncles, and aunts—whose tales add color and depth to our understanding of the world. Wally writes, “Soon enough, those storytellers will be gone to where you cannot hear the stories. And then you never will.” This Thanksgiving, take the time to listen. Ask questions. Record the moments. Preserve the memories. Because once they’re gone, the stories go with them—and that’s a loss we can never replace. #ThanksgivingReflections #StorytellingMatters
Make Thanksgiving story capture time. Jimmy Breslin was one of the few people on the planet I really wanted to meet. He was a writing idol, an Irish New York writer who reminded me of my Irish Philadelphia cop uncle. He hung out at Pep McGuire’s, maybe the best saloon ever. It was a place that would let a skinny fifteen-year-old who looked like he was, maybe, twelve, pass for a legal eighteen if he was quiet and didn’t get in anyone’s way. I never met Jimmy Breslin at Pep’s or anywhere else, but GOD, I loved his writing. I left New York for good in 1963 when I joined the Marines. I was in Pep’s one more time on my boot camp leave and in uniform. People bought me drinks then, and I didn’t have to worry about getting in anyone’s way. But I didn’t meet Jimmy Breslin. And now I never will. If you celebrate Thanksgiving this week, you are likely to be around people who have stories you want to hear and remember and tell to your children. Seize the opportunity to have those people tell you the stories. Record them. “Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day.” Soon enough, those storytellers will be gone to where you cannot hear the stories. And then you never will.

Thanksgiving offer! This was sent by my 27 year old colleague in one of my past positions-I was indeed humbled to read this as I know this is not an offer I would have made to an entire team. I'm in my 40's so considerably older than her-errr not helping! I tend to pick and choose who I like and hang out with-it's definitely not everyone. When I keep reiterating there is always a chance to learn and grow in every facet of life, this is a classic example. While media keeps propagating negativity, pitting people against each other, the ground reality is that small things like this have such a big impact on morale! It definitely reinforces our faith in humanity. Writing exactly what she wrote in her email: 'Just a quick reminder that if you do not have someone to celebrate Thanksgiving with, you are more than welcome to join my family for our meal tomorrow. We are rambunctious and always have a few guests for the holidays. I can come pick you up if you need a ride. Just let me know if you want to take me up on the offer!' Introspection: 1. For someone so young, I saw incredible grace and maturity. 2. She not only offered a meal, but a ride to a 40 mins away location 3. The email was sent 3 days in advance to give the recipients sufficient time to think over it Kudos!! Humbling experience for all of us. Will any of you make this offer Thanksgiving 2024?

I want to remind everyone that as we enter next week, not everybody celebrates Thanksgiving. For many of us it is for moral and ethical reasons, for others there it may be due to lack of family/friends in their area etc. I do not believe in pushing my personal views regarding something like this, but if you are interested I will link an article in the comments.

Happy Thanksgiving y'all. Let’s take a moment to recognize your greatest superpower: your ability to communicate with anyone and everyone. What sets you apart from animals and AI? Your capacity to imagine the future you want—and make it happen. So as you sit down for dinner, use that superpower wisely. Make sure every family member feels at home and welcome. Put aside the political squabbles, the grudges, and the snide remarks. Rise above it all. You have the power to bring order and serenity into this chaotic world. When your uncle (the “Goddamn Democrats” guy) starts eyeing your aunt (the “Darn Republicans” gal) with disdain, step in. Be the peacemaker. Your love alone can turn these two, who haven’t exchanged a word in the last decade, into besties—at least for one night. Remember, we’re engineers and salespeople at heart. We dream up the best ideas, and we know how to sell those ideas to others. So this Thanksgiving, let’s sell everyone on the idea of the best world we can imagine. It’s our future, after all, and we’re going to live in it. Let’s make it a great one. A peaceful one. Now go forth, set the quarrels aside, and have a wonderful celebration.
